For any of my fellow Four Seasons residents who may be concerned about diminishing interest or participation in your respective Club or group, the remedy is very simple: Announce that you will be serving chocolate cake, vanilla ice cream, and other goodies at your next event ! That is exactly what the Four Seasons Table Tennis Club did to celebrate the birthday of our fellow ping ponger, Mitch Harmon, a few weeks back, and guess what: The Courts Room was packed (see photo below). Folks who haven't seen each other in months walked through the door, along with some who never played ping pong in their lives and brought their pets (well, that may be an exaggeration, but you get the gist). While enjoying this incredible sugar-high, we played very aggressive ping pong in both singles and doubles at all three tables, while chowing down on more calories that exist in anybody's kitchen pantry. The good news is that a great time was had by all. The bad news is that what followed was a sudden spike in attendance at the next meeting of the local chapter of Weight Watchers! I am sure they appreciated all the new faces. The Spin 'n Slam Table Tennis Club was formed to attract any and all Four Seasons residents who love the game of ping pong, take the game and its rules seriously, and enjoy competitive play. Our group meets on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays at around 10:30 am. See you at The Courts . ~ Bob Rubenstein, brube88@gmail.com 60 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | DECEMBER 2023 For those of us who love playing tennis, it is such a nice feeling we can still be out there enjoying the sport in our golden years. I, for one, certainly feel blessed to be able to do that. While having fun on the tennis court, please don't forget one really important thing – SAFETY! 1. Stretch – Always stretch before playing. Stretching will help prevent unnecessary injuries to the joints and muscles. 2. Hydrate – Keep hydrating during play, especially on a hot day. Drink plenty of water in between games, even if you don't feel thirsty. 3. Sunscreen – Apply ample sunscreen, especially on a sunny day. Even on a cloudy day, the sun's UV rays can pierce through the clouds without you realizing it. 4. Backing Up – This one may seem innocuous, but it is extremely important to remember. If your opponent hits a lob over your head which will land behind you, do not back up and try to get to the ball. Instead, retreat by stepping sideways while watching where the ball is going to land. Backing up is very dangerous as the heel of your shoes could get caught on the rough surface of the court, causing you to fall backwards and hitting your head on the hard surface. Such a fall could result in severe injury to the head, or worse still, be fatal. This happened to one of our tennis friends right here in Four Seasons a couple of years ago. He never came out of the hospital! So, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, keep this in mind. So, let's be smart and be safe out there. We may still have another 15 to 20 years left to play some good tennis. Beat you all to The Courts!
