| OHCC LIVING | DECEMBER 2023 | 47 e last pickleball tournament of the year – Mixed Doubles – was a surefire crowd-pleaser. It appears that the summer "team play" lessons had a positive effect on both the quality and intensity of competition among the field of 24 teams, even if the experiment to shorten the length of the tournament resulted in a number of close games going unfinished. ere's much more to running these events than meets the eye, and Tournament Directors Diane Bednarski and Sid Saltzman assembled an enthusiastic crew of three dozen plus to run the venues, track the scores, and host the Jersey Mike's catered social that followed on the Palm Court. Nothing around here works without good volunteers! In the winner's circle at the end of competition were Allison Womack and Larry See (over Barbara Finney and Gary Forsberg) in the Advanced Division and Patricia Dellow and Klaus Waiblinger (over June Chang and Van Rhonheimer) in the Intermediate Division. Both final matches were fierce, but friendly, giving spectators surrounding Court 5 a really good show. With a fresh burst of energy, part-time resident Bill McGrath is teaming with another part-time resident, Greg Smith, to create more opportunities to get residents onto the tennis courts. Greg offered several "refresher" clinics this summer, and the pair hosted a tennis mixer in October to bring together those who play and those thinking about getting back into it. A few weeks ago, Bill launched doubles tennis drop-ins at the Terrace Courts (8 and 9) ursday mornings from 9 to 11 am. Interested residents need just show up with their racquets and a can of balls. Drop-in is open to all levels, but play will be by level. We're sure there are more tennis players out there – just come on down some ursday morning! e Racquet Club Board is busy at work on the 2024 calendar, and those who attended the November general meeting got a preview of some of what President Bob James has penciled in to get members outside and active year-round. is is more than simply an "athletic" club; we get members socializing, having fun together on and off the courts, and playing as well and as oen as they can.
