44 | OHCC LIVING | JANUARY 2024 | e Ocean Hills Sailing Club's 2023 year has come to a close with the long-planned Autumn Harvest Gala dinner and the last sails now behind us. e Harvest Gala was a fantastic event enjoyed by a record 134 club members and guests. e music and buffet dinner were wonderful, especially the ice cream sundaes for dessert, smothered in caramel and chocolate sauce and whipped cream. Everyone danced to the 50s, 60s and 70s classics played by the DJ. Of course, I would be remiss if I didn't comment on the decorations. Many thanks to our Social Director, Laura Carlson, who performed above and beyond as she always does. Abravanel Hall was truly decorated like a fall harvest scene on the farm even with the Autumn in the park "love" seats on the stage for relaxing and photos. And thanks, also, to her many volunteer helpers who put in many hours helping Laura the day before and on the day of the Gala. Please enjoy the photos of: Social Director, Laura Carlson and Donna Ryan, our club's treasurer; one of our club members, Sandra Dillon; and, members dancing up a storm under a warm harvest moon! We completed nine sails in November bringing the year's total to 86 and there are several planned in December to finish the year with nearly 90 sails in the history book. Also, our club has reached a record 282 members (121 new members) going into the new year. Next year will be exciting. e Board of Directors is hard at work planning for Do Dues Day on Jan. 13 and a general membership meeting for all our members scheduled for Jan. 22. e membership meeting will be a wonderful opportunity for our old members to welcome our many new members and for all to learn more about the club and what to expect in 2024. It will also be an opportunity for members to share their hopes for club activities. Furthermore, our webmaster, Sid Saltzman, has expanded the club's website capability to display videos in addition to photos. Expect to see the website in action very soon. And stay tuned, our Captains and Mates are honing their skills and preparing for an even better year in 2024 as our Fleet Captain, Charlie Cappello, convenes the first Captains and Mates meeting in January to start planning for and scheduling sail dates for the first two-month cycle. Lastly, the club completed its 2024 officer elections. e 2023 slate was elected to carry the club forward in 2024, although we lost our Secretary, Sue Detisch, who resigned just aer election balloting was completed. Fortunately, Judy Caston has stepped forward to fill the vacancy. ~ Written by: Skip Maniscalco Sailing Club Calorie Free Happy Hour!
