14 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | JANUARY 2024 | The GAC would like to remind golfers that we are in the winter season of golf play at Sun Lakes. This comes with the familiar frost delays and speedy greens. Please be mindful of the importance of adhering to frost delays and avoiding serious damage to the turf especially on the greens. When heading to the course use the streets since frost in some areas is not always readily apparent. The increase in green speeds is caused by the slow vegetation growth due to cool temperatures. This time of the year the greens are not being cut any shorter, cutting greens is only done to even and smooth bumps on the turf surface. Using the fairway as a route of travel to the Pro Shop, driving range, or shotgun start is a rules violation. This time of year also brings much needed rain to the region. Often the courses will be closed, walking only, or cart path only. It's important to follow these restrictions since repairing damage to soft turf takes time and expense. Once the courses are reopened, it is important to avoid flagged areas and use entry/exit gates that direct traffic away from areas that still may be soft. Once the flow of excess water runoff clears, the underground drains handle the surface water allowing the turf to dry out. At times during heavy rains the irrigation system is used to lower the water level in the lakes. This is done to keep the water levels from overflowing and compromising the integrity of the liners. One benefit of slow turf growth this time of year is the opportunity to perform equipment maintenance after a very busy year. Use a little care and consideration regarding frost and soft turf conditions during the winter season to avoid creating extra work for the maintenance crew. While maintenance activity may be reduced, they are still very busy getting the equipment in shape for spring. Golf Advisory Sun Lakes Committee Reports The PAC wishes everyone a healthy and Happy New Year! As we turn our attention to 2024, the list of 2024 major procurements for approved scheduled reserve projects, capital improvement, and operations will be substantial. We are looking forward to working with the Master Board and FirstService Residential on these projects. Projects on the immediate horizon include the following: • Lounge Expansion RFP – FSR provided the PAC with the designer's renderings and an initial estimate of project costs (both capital improvement and reserve fund allocations). At the time of this writing, FSR is in the process of creating the Request For Proposal for the PAC to review. The expectation is that it will be released in December, 2023 in order to select the contractor and commence construction by the end of January/early February, 2024. • Janitorial Services RFP – projected for February, 2024 The PAC is chartered to support the MBD and FSR in a research and recommendation capacity to support RFP preparation, proposal response evaluation, and draft contract review. All documents developed and processed since the inception of the PAC have been retained in an archive so that they can be used when the same or similar project may arise in the future. We are seeking qualified SLCC members who are interested in assisting. If you have an interest in joining our committee and have prior procurement-related work experience, please go to the SLCC website and select Community Info., Committees, Procurement Advisory Committee, and read the introduction in the PAC Handbook. Meetings are held on the third Monday of each month in the Administration Building Conference Room. Our next meeting is Jan. 15 at 9 am. Members of the SLCC community are welcome to attend and observe. Comments and questions pertaining to PAC related matters will be entertained at the end of the session. Procurement Advisory
