14 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | FEBRUARY 2024 | One of the important roles of the GAC is to address potential safety issues on our two golf courses. This includes identifying potential liability risks, dangers posed by mature overgrown trees, and trip and fall hazards from buckled cart paths. Once a potential risk is identified in partnership with golf course Superintendent Mark Burchfield, a proposal for corrective action is sent to the Master Board for approval. Over the past few years, these recommendations have resulted in warning signs along the ravine on the Executive Course and signs warning of golf ball danger to walkers entering the golf course area around the Championship Course #4 green. Guide wire barriers were also installed around drop off areas to prevent golf carts from falling off the edges of the ravine, drainage areas, and aeration pump locations. Sun Lakes has many trees that are overgrown and require trimming or removal. Yearly tree maintenance is needed to reduce the threat of safety to golfers and damage to property. Many of these trees can cause damage to cart paths and perimeter walls. Areas of the cart path that are buckling or severely cracked and at risk of breaking up are recommended for replacement to eliminate potential trip and fall dangers. Recommendations made to the Board are often prioritized by areas deemed most in need of corrective action. When performing any of this work, an effort is made to improve the function and enhance the aesthetics as well. The two golf courses are Sun Lakes biggest asset and when making maintenance recommendations the GAC hopes to add value for all homeowners and provide the best possible experience for golfers.
