| SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | FEBRUARY 2024 | 9
By Michele Walter, crystalwater@dc.rr.com
Well, we are getting back in the groove for this 2024 new
year. Our presentation in January was Coyote Awareness.
What a great presentation Heather Hill put on for us. If
you missed it, you can watch it on Channel 97.
Hopefully no one had any issues with scams this holiday
season and everyone stayed safe and healthy.
It seems that we have more walkers out in our community lately.
Here are some walking safety tips. Safety is a priority for our
residents. Let's stay safe while walking in Sun Lakes.
SMART WALKING SAFETY TIPS
• Watch out for uneven surfaces and obstacles in your path.
• Try to stay on paved or concrete sidewalks rather than grassy
surfaces.
• Be alert, observant and aware of your surroundings.
• Use crosswalks. Never assume a driver sees you.
• Don't get in a hurry. Running or rushing increases the likelihood
of a fall.
• If you must walk at night, try to stay in a well-lighted area.
HOW TO ENSURE A SAFE WALKING ROUTINE
• Wear proper footwear
• Avoid texting or calling
• Choose walking routes carefully
• Avoid walking in extreme weather
• Carry a water bottle
• Use a walking stick
• Carry your cell phone and ID in case of an accident or
emergency. Have a contact person in case of an emergency.
• Carry a whistle
HEALTH BENEFITS OF WALKING
• Increases energy
• Strengthens muscles and bones
• Promotes heart health
• Controls blood sugar levels
• Manages weight
• Improves mental health
Our next program is Feb. 6 on Preparedness Awareness. We will
have guest speakers and our EPAP team.
