| SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | FEBRUARY 2024 | 57 Table Tennis/Ping Pong Last December, Valerie Villareal, husband Chris, Gary Lile, and John Williams traveled to the Ontario Convention Center to participate in the 2023 USA Table Tennis (USATT) Open tournament, a national level event. The whole purpose was to get Valerie an USATT rating in preparation for the Huntsman World Senior Games in St. George, Utah, scheduled for October 2024. Gary and John warmed her up with intense practice matches before the main event. Husband Chris was the cheerleader and emotional support guy. Here is her reaction to the experience: "e 2023 USATT Open Championships were held in Ontario, California. Aer hearing about the wonderful experience that Gary and John had at the tournament in St. George, my husband Chris encouraged me to participate in the event as a 30 year wedding gi. While far from being a great player, I do enjoy new experiences. I can check this one off my bucket list. Playing at Sun Lakes with others who share the same passion for the game is wonderful, but the experience in playing with others from all over the country is a totally amazing experience. I played two outstanding players (my way of saying that I lost to them). I enjoyed the opportunity and having my husband watch me play was the highlight of the day. As the saying goes, I went to the championships and all I brought home was this shirt." We usually play Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, 4 to 6 pm, and Saturdays,10 am to 12 noon, but it is best to check the SLCC website for updated schedule changes, because sometimes we get bumped due to other community activities going on. Hard copies of the schedule are available on game days in the Ballroom. If there are any questions, suggestions, or concerns, please contact Gary Lile at (805) 722-7427, or G4lile@ yahoo.com, or John Williams at (951) 489-973, jgwms. williams@gmail.com.
