| OHCC LIVING | MARCH 2024 | 43 Ahoy all OHSC sailors, it is now time to kick off 2024! The Sailing Club's officers and Committee Chairs started the year with a very successful Do Dues Day. Signing over 50 new members, the club was launched on a trajectory (Oooh – that's not very nautical, is it?) to exceed last year's membership. Do Dues Day was followed a week later by the Club's first General Meeting of 2024. Everyone who attended was greeted with warm welcomes from our officers, Committee chairs, our Captains and Mates, and hot pizza, cookies and refreshments served up by the Club's dedicated member support staff. Our chandler, Gail Miscioscia, was busy showing new and old members items of clothing with the Club's logo affixed that could be acquired in exchange for a donation. A presentation of "2024 envisioned" (photos below) gave our attendees lots of details about the Club. The presentation was kicked off by Commodore Skip Maniscalco who introduced the Club's officers & directors, committee chairs, captains & mates, and the Club's support staff. Fleet Captain Charlie Cappello talked about sail planning with an overview of the different sail themes to be offered. Some themes discussed were harbor and ocean sails, dock and dine sails, Glorietta Bay and Coronado Bay sails, a possible regatta and sailing to Rady Shell to hear a performance "on the water." He also gave some very helpful instruction on how to sign up for a sail, indicating there will be plenty of opportunity to sail on one of the 84 sails planned for the year. The Club's training programs were outlined including classroom and on-the-water training conducted by Dave Ramgren, the club's training coordinator. The training will be geared toward all experience levels from novice to advanced. Treasurer Donna Ryan talked about the Club's finances and sail costs, other event and activity costs, and equipment purchases. She gave a brief overview of the Club's operating budget. Membership Chair Julie Pashkowsky raved about the Club's record success on Do Dues Day. Laura Carlson, the Club's Social Chair talked about the big November "Speakeasy" themed dinner/dance gala. It's time for flapper dresses and Spatz! So, start planning your attire, now. Club captains and mates met in early February to calendar sails for the first sailing cycle starting in mid-March and running through April. Please remember, if you do not get out in the first cycle, the next cycle for May and June will be announced in April. Let's all get out on the water and have a wonderful year of sailing and camaraderie. May all our Sailing Club members and all OHCC residents enjoy fair winds and following seas. Written by Skip Maniscalco, Commodore Sailing Club If you are looking for a way to reduce stress and anxiety, and a way to increase flexibility and balance, then Tai Chi exercise may be just what the doctor ordered. Originally, Tai Chi was developed for self-defense, but has evolved into a graceful form of exercise. Some describe it as meditation in motion because it promotes serenity through gentle, flowing movements. Tai Chi is an ancient Chinese tradition that, today, is practiced as a graceful form of exercise. It involves a series of movements performed in a slow, focused manner and accompanied by deep breathing. Tai Chi is a noncompetitive, self-paced system of gentle physical exercise and stretching. Each posture flows into the next without pause, ensuring that your body is in constant motion. Tai Chi is low impact and puts minimal stress on muscles and joints, making it generally safe for all ages and fitness levels. It is especially suitable for older adults who otherwise may not exercise. The benefits of Tai Chi may include: decreased stress, improved mood, increased energy, improved flexibility, balance, and agility, and improved muscle strength. OHCC offers a free Tai Chi class each Tuesday and Thursday, 9 to 10 am, in the Abravenal Hall. Each class is led by a video presentation that lasts about 45 minutes.
