Helping Hands Group Blossoms and Butterflies All of us who are concerned about the future of the Western Monarch butterfly received a sobering reminder that, for all the progress we have made in the past two years, the butterfly's fate is far from assured. The results of the annual count of Monarchs in California have just been released, and 2023 saw a decline in numbers of 30 percent, to 233,000. While this is a huge improvement from the 2018 count that saw just 1,800 remaining, it's a sign that we cannot rest on our laurels – the Western Monarch's survival is still questionable. The Save the Monarch Butterfly Club will continue its efforts to make a significant contribution to this cause. We have planned many activities for 2024; one of them is upcoming, when we will cohost (with the Garden Club) an event for all residents on May 10 from 10 am to 12 pm in Abravanel Hall as part of OHCC's 40th anniversary celebration. Come and talk with experts on planting nectar and native plants that will attract all the right pollinators to your garden, and learn which plants to avoid. You will learn about the miraculous cycle that monarchs go through to become such beautiful creatures. Refreshments will be served. The SMB Club will be hosting our annual milkweed delivery in March. This event is open to all residents. If you would like to order milkweed for your home garden, please contact Myra Esler at mke6717@gmail.com before March 9. Be sure to include your email and phone. The milkweed will be available for a small donation, so you will be paying much less than you would at a nursery. Written by Myra Esler Save the monarch butterfly Genealogy Interest Group The Genealogy Interest Group is a growing group of individuals who want to find out about their heritage and their ancestry. Curiosity about those who came before and formed us is important. The group provides tools to do your research and help in getting started. For the experienced we can offer suggestions to break through the brick walls of past generations. Meeting with others looking in the same geographical areas is a great help. We have both Apple computers and PCs in the computer room. We will meet for a Help Session on Fri., March 15 at 10 am. Newcomers are welcome. All sessions can be seen on the TAG calendar. We are happy to offer the World Explorer version of Ancestry.com free of charge in the computer room. This program would cost an individual over $100 a month. We also offer the Family Tree Maker on several of the computers in the lab. A family tree can be started and compiled with either or both of these programs with many hints to assist in your research. Coordinators are Dorothy Miller, Shirley Rock and Peggy Singh. Contact us at rootsatOHCC@gmail. com. Written by Peggy Singh
