26 | OHCC LIVING | MARCH 2024 | We are singing. Rehearsals have started for our Spring Concert to be held in Abravanel Hall on May 19 at 2 pm. Our wonderful Director, Beverly Taylor challenges us with wonderful music and makes it a joyful experience. If you haven't joined yet but are thinking about it, please come out and consider joining our family of singers. I started singing with the group more than 10 years ago. I joined because my wife told me that there were over twenty women and four men, and they definitely needed more men. I pointed out that I hadn't sung in any chorus since my voice changed around age of 11 and she countered with "so what." Hard to argue with logic like that. If you like to sing but think only in the shower, give us a try, you may surprise yourself. If you love to sing, we would love to have you join us. If you want to sit in on a rehearsal and decide if you are interested, that is perfectly acceptable. I am anticipating a wonderful year of rehearsals and concerts. The Chorale is a fun group of people, and we all love to share the joy of music and singing together. Even if you don't feel like singing, there are many things you can do to help the group. Give it a try. I look forward to seeing you. Written by Jack Shabel Choral Society Garden Club After a long, wet Ocean Hills winter, pollinators are foraging around looking for food. March nectar is especially important for early emerging bees, as well as some butterflies and pollinator flies and beetles. By planting early, pesticide free, blooming flowers and bulbs you can provide local pollinators with pollen and nectar now when they need it most. All the beauty of spring is dependent on the effectiveness of our pollinators, who we support with our landscape. It will be fascinating to hear about attracting and supporting pollinators from the OHCC Garden Club March 13 speaker, Sharon Reeves. Our speaker, Sharon Reeves is a San Diego Master Gardener, since 1998. She has worked as a consulting Horticulturist for Monrovia Nurseries and as a landscape designer for Brightview Landscaping. In 2015 she graduated with an MS in Biology/Ecology from SDSU. Her design business is called ReWild. Sharon specializes in drought tolerant, native and wildlife gardens. We hope you will join us for this meeting to learn how to attract more pollinators to your yards. If you have any plants or cuttings you would like to share, there will be a table at the side entrance. We will meet in Abravanel Hall, social time and goodies at 9:30 am and the meeting begins at 10 am. New this year to our meeting is our question box, if you have a gardening question you would like answered, drop it in the box before the meeting. We will pick one to discuss at the meeting, it will also be answered on the OHCC Garden Club Facebook page. The Garden Club along with our friends the SMB Club will be sponsoring a joint event for OHCC 40th Anniversary on Fri., May 10, we hope you will be to join us in our celebration.
