42 | LIFE IN SOLERA | MARCH 2024 |
Most residents prejudge our
group as geeks playing with
their toys, aka radios. It may
be true that some of the club
members got into the hobby for
the excitement of making long-
distance calls without the use
of a telephone. As a means of furthering their radio hobby desires,
members joined local clubs like the San Gorgonio Pass Radio Club
(SPARC, https://www.w6prc.org ).
This is where the Solera Radio Club defers. Our mission and
edict is to provide communications options if and when routine
communication delivery systems fail. We are poised to train residents
in the use of affordable radio communications equipment. The club
is the auxiliary communications element of the Solera CERT Cadre
(visit our article in this magazine).
Our efforts in providing communications resilience to residents
has led us to meet a very special Solera resident (see photo above).
You might have seen or met Mason Oden of the Solera campus or at
the Clubhouse. He's the guy who travels around in an articulating
wheelchair. Mason came to one of our meetings to learn about
the Solera Emergency Communication Radio System (SECRS). He
wanted to have a reliable way to call for help while in Solera.
After learning about SECRS, we gifted Mason a handheld radio. He
has returned to our weekly meetings and developed the necessary
skills to use his radio proficiently. As a regular SECRS user, Mason
participates in our monthly radio use drills. Mason is now aspiring
to obtain an amateur radio license. "I want to be able to talk longer
distances" was his reason for being licensed.
If you wish to learn more about radios, please attend one of our
workshops. Details can be found on our website: https://www.

TRIVIA ANSWER FOR
MARCH 2024:
Question: What is the
difference between AM radio
and FM radio?
Answer: The main difference
between AM (Amplitude
Modulation) and FM (Frequency Modulation) radio waves lies in
the strength and fidelity of the signal. AM radio was more popular
due to its longer range and ability to travel over hills and around
buildings. Whereas, FM radio has gained popularity due to its
higher sound quality and resistance to electromagnetic interference.
