6 | LIFE IN SOLERA | MAY 2024 | Solera CERT Cadre What3words is a proprietary geocode system designed to identify any location on the surface of the Earth within ten feet. Street addresses aren't accurate enough to specify precise locations, such as building entrances, gate entry points and rural areas. This makes it hard to find places and prevents people from describing exactly where help is needed in an emergency. The app is free to download and super easy to use on your cell phone or computer. Once the app is downloaded, the app will give you three words that describes your location. Example, the intersection of Fairway Dr and Brentwood may be described in the What3words system as battery.desk.jar. If there were to be an emergency at this location, the user would be able to tell emergency dispatchers the exact location of the emergency by simply using the three exampled words mentioned. What3words has been practiced by the Radio/CERT team in the Solera community as part of their monthly training. The What3words app has been used in a real time emergency by CERT team member George Vawter. Last year George and a security officer performed CPR on a person at the Golf Club Drive gate entrance. George was able to give emergency dispatch his exact location using the What3words app. Emergency responders responded to the exact location of the incident to take over emergency care. The result was a quick and efficient emergency response without delay and most importantly, a life was saved.
