30 | THE COLONY NEWS | MAY 2024 | With so many members in the wine club, everyone has a different idea as to what the Wine Club Board of Directors really does. So, let me tell you some of what happens… Did you know that the Board members are responsible for creating our fun and interesting events? Each Board member plans at least one event a year. This process can take three or four months to develop ideas, contact outside resources (wineries, caterers, musicians), and work closely with the rest of the Board to create an exciting experience for our members. Volunteers are also lined up to serve as "pourers" and a clean-up crew is selected for each event. Well, there's more to what they do, but we'll save that for a later date. Meanwhile, we enjoyed a fantastic evening with Avensole Winery in March. Sharon and Michelle from Avensole presented six fabulous wines and told us about this mostly female-run winery. Wine was offered for sale at a discount to our members and guests. April's event was a relaxing afternoon of wine tasting and vineyard views at Julie's Dream. Lunch was provided by Culinary Creations, and members enjoyed tasting five lovely wines. Our May 15 event is sure to please when we welcome Danza del Sol Winery. Our volunteer pourers will serve you six different wines, and dinner will be a tasty taco bar. Danza del Sol Winery will be selling their wines at a discounted price to all guests. Tickets will be sold in the Atrium on Monday, April 22 from 10 am to noon, and again from 5 to 7 pm. And FINAL SALES for tickets (both member and guests) will be held on Monday, April 29 from 10 am to noon. Ticket price is $35 for members, $40 for guests. As Luis Fernando Olaverri once said, "Wine is the only artwork you can drink." If you are interested in joining the Wine Club, please give Sharon Evans a call at 951-445-3861. If you are interested in purchasing tickets, please attend one of the ticket sale dates listed above. If you cannot make it to the dates listed, you can have another club member purchase your ticket for you. Cheers! Wine Club By Valorie Hillerich Several "unsupervised seniors" from The Colony made a name for themselves at the Rio Bend RV Resort in El Centro over St. Patrick's Day weekend. The highlight of the trip was participating in the local parade. Even though the event was canceled, everyone got their green on and made our way in decorated trucks throughout the park. Several of the locals came out to cheer us on, with some even joining in our impromptu parade. Our days were filled with good friends, good food and a few good drinks. We enjoyed dinner and dancing at the on-site restaurant and a group breakfast hosted by Judie and Gerry LaPierre and Pat and George Herrera. We also played some pickleball and golf. Several people also found time to explore the town of El Centro, including a special trip to Dillards! We played games, told stories around the campfire, and even witnessed the rocket launch. This park is becoming a crowd favorite. We're already planning on a return trip in 2025. Our next trip this year is June 23-27 to Santee Lakes Recreation Area. On November 10-14 we'll be visiting Coachella Lakes RV Resort, a new park near Indio. If all of this sounds like fun and you would like more information on the Colony Roadrunners RV Club, feel free to give me a call. RV ownership is not required.
