| THE COLONY NEWS | JUNE 2024 | 31 May paddle tournament, canceled. You guessed it — rained out! The courts were too wet for play, so once more we set up in the Atrium for snacks, coffee and friendly banter. Thank you to Jeanne Bender and Herb Reynolds for hosting our breakfast table. Now that June is upon us, and the weather will be heating up, we need to be aware of the signs of dehydration. According to the Mayo Clinic, dehydration occurs when you use or lose more fluid than you take in. If you don't replace lost fluids, you will get dehydrated. Important to know is that thirst isn't always a reliable early indicator of the body's need for water. Many people, particularly older adults, don't feel thirsty until they are already dehydrated. Some of the symptoms include extreme thirst, less frequent urination, fatigue, dizziness and confusion. Racquet sports in hot and humid weather increase your risk of dehydration and heat illnesses. When the air is humid, sweat can't evaporate and cool you as quickly as it normally does, and this leads to an increased body temperature and the need for more fluids. In general, it's best to start hydrating the day before strenuous exercise, then during activity replenish fluids at regular intervals and continue drinking water or other fluids. That said, come on down to the courts if you are interested in learning paddle tennis or tennis. We would love to include you in the fun, and we have paddles for your use to get you started. And don't forget, bring water! Racquet Club By Karen Nichols, 619-550-8194 By the time you get this issue, we will have crowned our new league champion! Our awards dinner was on May 23. Winners will be in the July issue of e Colony News. There are three teams in the hunt for first place with two teams tied for first and only one week left to bowl for standings. In first place as of May 2 are Strikes Happen (Jim Wheeler, Beverly Patten, Ed Munroe and Jerry Hanson) and Ten Pins (Steffan Carroll, Gloria Carroll, Joe Roux). Both teams have identical wins / losses — 80 wins and 48 losses. Game On (Ali Holland, Andy Sciacca, John Haller and Norris Day) is only one and one half games out of first place with 78.5 wins and 49.5 losses. We are presently forming our Summer League, so feel free to contact me for entry into it or our Winter League. My bowling team is looking for a fourth bowler for Winter League. Any bowling average is welcome but, for balance, the bowler must be female. See you on the lanes! Bowling Hank Fleischer, 714, 272, 3684 Memory of Mary Crockett Ladies Luncheon Breakfast table
