36 | OHCC LIVING | JUNE 2024 | Woodchucks Our OHCC coterie of Woodchucks (think family) has begun to stir the sawdust. We are working on home "to do" lists, projects for the community, toys for the children of Camp Pendleton, and pens for the Wounded Warriors. We continue to help various OHCC clubs with projects. e new Lanai has benefited from the Woodchucks' very early contribution of the model that became our community's favored design. For Woodchuck members who want to learn more about the shop, or want to visit, we have started a "Shop Host" program. ere will be a volunteer Woodchuck at work in the shop 9 to 10:30 am and 3 to 4:30 pm every Monday through ursday. Come down to say "Hi." is month, we are celebrating two outstanding Woodchuck volunteers: Goldie Weis - Goldie makes hundreds of toys annually for the holiday toy drive benefiting Camp Pendleton families. As if that is not enough, she also makes toys, puzzles, and toy-kits for the Armed Forces YMCA (ASYMCA) that are distributed to schools at Camp Pendleton. See Goldie's thank you from the kids at Camp Pendleton. "Murf " Haugen - Another featured Woodchuck volunteer, is "Murf," who is shown in the photo (above, right) with his latest project. e inspiration was the Tesla "Cybertruck" belonging to a fellow-Woodchuck. I am sure you have seen Brian Buchan's incredible, otherworldly, white pickup truck. Murf is making 10 trucks for display and play. Examples of his award-winning work have been displayed at the Woodworking exhibit at the Del Mar Fair. Goldie and Murf are fine representatives of the OHCC Woodchucks… you make us proud! Written by Betsy Murphy Village Vets Recently, two of your Village Vet Members, Joe Ashby and Dee Wardell, had the privilege of visiting one of America's most sacred overseas sites: Normandy. e Normandy landings were the landing operations and associated airborne operations on Tuesday, June 6, 1944, of the Allied invasion of Normandy in Operation Overlord during World War II. Codenamed Operation Neptune and oen referred to as D-Day, it was the largest seaborne invasion in history. Joe and Dee shared many pictures with us, and I am sharing three with you. e three pictures above are from the Normandy American Cemetery in Colleville-sur-Mer, France. Please pause and center your attention on the middle picture. War has a cost. Many who fought on that day paid with the ultimate sacrifice. June 6, 2024, will mark the 80th Anniversary of D-Day. I hope you will again pause and reflect on the sacrifices not only of the men and women that day, but also of the sacrifices our military and their families have made and continue to make to keep our nation free. June 14, 2024, is Flag Day. Honor our veterans and honor America by flying your flag proudly that day. If you need help with flying your flag or need one, please contact Bob St. Laurent at (336) 509-8788 or bobchar1010@aol.com One additional note: our next General Meeting will be on July 25. Our plans that day are to have two events. e first will be a panel presentation led by Robert Genat featuring Air Force B-52 crew members. e second will be a breakout session where Village Vet members can sit down one-on-one with Veterans Service Officers (VSO) to go over their VA claims submission and status. To sign up for a VSO session, please contact Bob Bechill at 209-663-5088 or bechillnavy@gmail.com. Written by Bob Bechill "Murf 's Cybertrucks" Missing you! "A thank-you for Goldie's dinosaurs"
