6 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | JUNE 2024 | By Michele Walter, crystalwater@dc.rr.com If you didn't have an opportunity to listen to Guillermo from San Gorgonio Hospital on the Stroke Center, I encourage you to watch it on Channel 97. Our liquor license is under THREAT! ere are a few members who bring their own alcoholic beverages into the Ballroom and on to the Veranda without paying the corkage fee or hidden in other containers. State law requires that ALL alcoholic beverages consumed within the Main Clubhouse liquor license footprint must be purchased at the Main Clubhouse. Any wine brought to the premise MUST BE opened and tagged by a wait staff employee before consuming. Violators WILL BE subject to disciplinary action by the Master Board of Directors. PLEASE don't be the ones that cause the HOA to lose our liquor license. One of our biggest issues here in Sun Lakes is speeding by residents, guests, and vendors. Please watch your speed in the designated areas of Sun Lakes. Speed limits range from 15, 20, and 25 mph. Be aware of how fast you're driving your car or golf cart. Make sure you stop at all stop signs even if you think no one is coming. You just never know who is coming around the bend, including walkers and bicyclists. Remember, golf carts DO NOT have the right of way. ese speed limits and stop signs are for your safety. Please respect them! ELDER FRAUD IS ON THE RISE! Elder fraud is an expensive crime. Scams targeting individuals aged 60 and older caused over $3.4 billion in losses in 2023, an increase of approximately 11 percent from the previous year. What are the most common types of senior scams? • Tech support • Family impostor • Government impostor • Online shopping scams • Romance Scams • Fake sweepstakes and lotteries • Money transfer system fraud • Real estate and home repair scams HOW TO AVOID AND REPORT SCAMS Question companies' claims and motives. Never share your personal or financial information over the phone. Don't buy anything from solicitors over the phone. Get on the "Do Not Call" list. Remember you may be at risk from those close to you. Monitor your credit card and bank accounts. Make sure your computer doesn't have any viruses. No one is exempt from being a potential target of a scammer and many con artists prey upon seniors who are well-educated and have above-average incomes. ey use sophisticated, convincing sales pitches that sound legitimate, making it easy for anyone to become a target. Visit the FBI Elder Fraud website for more resources: i.gov/elderfraud. e U.S. DOJ, Office for Victims of Crime also offers the National Elder Fraud Hotline as a resource to assist with reporting, (833) 372-8311.
