Another monthly tournament success was had in May when many forces threatened to compromise the day but did not. The collection of nine foursomes withstood aerated greens and ball consuming roughs to interfere with our time on the links. Mother Nature, however, provided ideal conditions during the event. When the tournament was over the following posted winning position for the contest: Winning Teams 1st 46.039 Terry Lundquist, Sue Jordan, Dennis Murphy and Pat Byron 2nd 46.233 Leo Pasco, Peggy Clendenen, Dan and Sheryl Beamish 3rd 49.997 Kirk Stanford, Denise Sturm, Mike and Leigh Tsumura 4th 50.845 Charles Craven, Paula Thompson, Ken Kawamura and Bonnie Hinman Closest to the Pin #5 Women, Sherry Roberts – 9'2" / Men, Randy Meyer – 9'10" #15 Women, Pat Bailey – 2'3" / Men, Dan Beamish – 13'3" #16 Team #1A, Kirk Stanford, Denise Sturm, Mike and Leigh Tsumura – 8'11" The banquet, however, was a different story for the "Regular Scramble" competition. As is usually the case during and after the awarding of the "Darwin Trophy," the Humblest of MCs made a small announcement error in the awards portion of the banquet. After the Darwin presentation, he announced the winning CPT team incorrectly hole #16. Then followed by near pandemonium eruption by what can only be seen as "hemoglobin in the water" as a "mostly peaceful" attack began. It was reminiscent of the December 14, 2008 press conference at the prime minister's palace in Baghdad, Iraq when a journalist threw both of his shoes at United States President George W. Bush. Thank goodness, none of that occurred and once under control, the banquet turmoil subsided to a "peaceful protest" for the remainder of the evening. Darwin Award Team or Person: Larry Determan. Issue: Stuffing the tournament scorecard into the Jack and Jill drawer. Everyone is aware that the cards are to be placed in the Styrofoam Box used for the past 15 years. Our next contest is scheduled for Thursday, June 13 and will be one of our two-flight venues, "A & B Format." As with all Jack and Jill events, you DO NOT have to be a member of either the Men's or Women's Golf Clubs to play. Just pick up your sticks and join us for the fun and friendly competition. See ya on the links! 32 | THE COLONY NEWS | JULY 2024 | Jack & Jill By Dennis Murphy, 951-461-0457 Ladies Golf By Judy Lebovitz, 951-461-0065 The weather has been great for golf, and we started our June event with a scramble tournament with the back nine ladies. A fun day was had by everyone. The winning foursome was Marge Anderson, Sheryl Beamish, Donita Scott and Peggy Clendenen. The Aces for the month of May were Susan Connelly for high handicap and Debbie Johnson for low handicap. The winners of the club championship were Barbara Keen in 3rd low net, Donita Scott in 2nd low net, and Vickie Cornille in 1st low net. Susan Connelly came in 1st low gross, Anita Hoetker was the runner up, and Debbie Johnson is our new club champion. (see photo). We were saddened to learn of the passing of one of our long-time and valued members, Billie Denney. She was a great golfer and our club champion seven years in a row. We miss her, and we send our condolences to her family. A donation will be made in her memory to the VFW. Two ladies who recently joined us will be playing with the back nine group, and one returning member, Marilyn Pierce, has rejoined them. To beat some of the heat, tee time for July, August and September will be at 7:30 am. If you are interested in learning more about our club, please contact Peggy Clendenen at 951- 696-2169. We would be delighted to have you join us for golfing and our fun events and informative monthly lunch meetings. We hope to see you on the links!
