| OHCC LIVING | JULY 2024 | 13 Celebrate July! America e Beautiful O beautiful for spacious skies, For amber waves of grain, For purple mountain majesties Above the fruited plain! America! America! God shed his grace on thee, And crown thy good with brotherhood From sea to shining sea! - Katherine Lee Bates Throughout my childhood, and now in the autumn of my years, this patriotic song has always tugged at my heart. Whether listening to my grandchildren proudly perform and sing about America in their school choirs or listening to it performed by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, I am reminded of the blessings of living in this great country, America. Even in these very trying times, the month of July reminds us of the freedoms given to us in 1776. These freedoms are offered to us daily as our library doors stand open to welcome us within to read the many thoughts of authors who share the American dream and more. This month, our library will present our fourth offering of the "Afternoons with Authors" series. It features a discussion of Laura Soldinger Yotter's book, Death and Diamonds, a memoir of her father who survived seven Nazi Holocaust death camps. It is a story of perseverance, courage, and dignity. He worked for Oskar Schindler and was finally liberated from Mauthausen death camp and eventually made his way to America where he taught Native Americans in Arizona the art of diamond cutting. He shared his story in his own words with the hope that the atrocities that he experienced could never happen again. His book is dedicated to the six million Jews who died, and all others who endured the Holocaust. His purpose was "to honor them, spread love, kindness, hope and peace for generations to come." - Laura Yotter. Don't miss this five-star experience, another reminder of how blessed we are to live in a country based on individual freedom. Join us Sun., July 14, 1 pm in Abravanel Hall. Library Members are free; non-members are $5. Sign up at front desk. I recently read the novel, e Midnight Library by Matt Haig, which is presently available in our library. As I turned to the first page, these words begged me to continue. "Between life and death there is a library, she said, and within that library, the shelves go on forever. Every book provides you with a chance to see how things would have been if you had made other choices. Would you have done anything differently if you had the chance to undo your regrets? "This author is adept at digging into the human heart." - e Sunday Times (London) Happy Fourth of July! "May Our Flag Wave Proudly Forever!"
