Are you a dancer? Well, some of us might answer an adamant "NO" to that question, but we were all dancers at some point. In fact, as a three-week-old baby, you were already starting to sync up your movements to the beat of any music you heard. And even if you now identify as a klutz with two left feet, I'll bet you have trouble sitting completely still when you hear your favorite tune. Dancing is in our bones, and it's more than just a fun form of entertainment. Dance transports us into a state of flow where we forget about our troubles. Dancing is a way to stay fit for people of all ages. It has a wide range of physical and mental benefits including; improved condition of your heart and lungs, increase muscular strength, endurance and motor fitness. Not only did Dance fill my heart with joy but it also motivated and inspired me, gave me confidence, taught me responsibility and teamwork, put me in great physical shape, and gave me an amazing social connection to my peers. The club sponsors weekly ballroom dance lessons each Wednesday in Abravanel Hall from 2 to 3:45 pm. • 2:00 – 2:45 pm Beginner Class • 2:45 – 3:00 pm Dance Tips and Techniques for both Beginners and Intermediates • 3:00 – 3:45 pm Intermediate Class The cost for the Beginner or Intermediate class is $10/person per class for both members and nonmembers. Pay at the door (no reservations required, just come). The dance being taught changes each month. The following is the class schedule through October this year. * July, Night Club Two Step * August, Hustle * September, Salsa * October, Cha-Cha. The dance being taught in July is Night Club Two Step (NC2S) which is a very simple, beautiful, and elegant dance that is perfect for slow songs. It is a great alternative for dancers who want to go beyond a simple slow dance with their partner. It has all the grace, flow and movement of waltz but can be done to mainstream music or anything in 4/4 time. It's a great dance to learn how to dance to slow music. It is an easy and practical partner dance to learn as it can be danced to all sorts of contemporary soft rock music. Lesson Review and Practice Sessions are held in Abravanel Hall from 2 to 4 pm each week on Mondays. Marvin and Lynn Wheeler who are very experienced dancers review Wednesday's lessons and provide help upon request. After the review, you can practice your dancing to a variety of ballroom music. The event is FREE, just drop in. These sessions are open to all residents of OHCC and guests. The annual membership dues for the Ballroom Dance Club are $10 per person. With this membership you will receive regular emails describing club activities as well as discounts for dances. To join, just drop your check off at the front desk.
