Chances are on Fri., July 19, members of the Doo Wop and Disco Club will be dancing in the new Lanai for the first time! Although finishing touches may still be needed, projections are that the building will be far enough along to accommodate the crowd and band. If all goes as planned, Doo Wop will be one of the first groups to enjoy the new open-air 3800 sq. ft. building that can accommodate 200 round tables. While the venue will most likely be the Lanai, in the event it is not ready, Abravanel Hall will be available. Since the staff does not book two major parties at the same time, we have both the Hall and Lanai reserved. Theme of the party is A Mid-Summer Night's Dance, featuring Cool Rush, a five-piece classic rock/pop band that has performed here before to rave reviews. Cool Rush has entertained at Humphrey's Backstage Live, Comstock Bar and Grill, The Campland on the Bay Resort on Mission Bay, and as far east as the Palm Springs-Rancho Mirage area. They will play on the Coors Light Avenue Stage at the San Diego Fair on July 6 and are frequent guests on KUSI San Diego's "Good Morning." Formed in 2015, the band recently added lead vocalist Courtney Flowers, who joins Bill (guitar/vocalist) and Jim Reiger (vocalist/ keyboard), Mark Sinatra (drums; yes, he's a distant relative), and Dan Eller (bass and manager). Cool Rush is one of San Diego's top classic rock/pop bands, playing hits from the 70s to the 2000's. Host for this party is the hard-working and creative Jan Kawal. Coffee, tea, and water will be provided. It's BYOE (Bring your own everything.) If you like to dance or just to sit with friends and listen to great bands, plan to join Doo Wop. Just go online to download a membership form, fill it out and drop it off with a $10 check at the Clubhouse front desk. Then you'll get email notices of upcoming parties and other relevant club information. Hope to see you on the dance floor. Written by Tom Harwood | OHCC LIVING | JULY 2024 | 15 Village Squares Forty years! The celebrations are over, but what fun it was! It's rewarding to think that our club actually formed at the beginning, 40 years ago. Murry and Ida Rose certainly started something when they gathered a few friends together and launched the Village Squares. We have danced continuously ever since. Our first caller was Wil Eades, then Jim Randall for 30 years, and now Mike Haworth. We have certainly been fortunate in our choice of callers. Our own 40th celebration was hosting an open house at our regular square dance on May 29. Our members brought a wealth of snacks and treats, and many people new to square dance visited and had a chance to experience what square dance is all about. It's still alive in Ocean Hills and in many clubs in the area. We will keep dancing and introducing newcomers to the fun and camaraderie we experience every Wednesday. Dancing is good for the mind, body, and spirit. If you haven't tried it, come down any Wednesday at 6:30 pm and watch us as we allemande and do-si-do. Written by Valerie ompson Doo Wop & Disco Dance
