| OHCC LIVING | JULY 2024 | 45 Racquet Club Summer really IS here at last…and not just because we have a marvelous re-imagined Lanai to call our summer home. The Racquet Club is gearing up for Live on the Lanai – a reprise performance of The Buckley's 2023 "concert on the slab" which was a joyous, popular members-only event on the footprint of the old lanai. Tickets will go fast, so don't miss out on Summer Chill 2024. Donna Ryan has assembled an enthusiastic volunteer crew to stage the Club's inaugural event in the Lanai. There will, of course, be a new wrinkle or two! With the gloom behind us, there is every reason for members to start polishing their racquet sport skills. OHCC Resident and USAPA Elite Pro Greg Smith offered a small group strategy- positioning clinic and has plans for some additional instruction over the next few months. Paddle tennis has two open drop-ins every week (Mondays 9 to 11 am and Fridays 11 am to 1 pm) at the HOA courts. Show up to give it a try – they'll give lessons on the spot. Summer is badminton season here, so check the website for the playing schedule. Summer's a good time to learn pickleball, so don't put it off any longer. Our website has details on free beginner lessons for all residents – all that's required is attendance at a one-hour orientation to ensure you understand what it takes to play safely and have fun on our courts. Contact our Help Desk to sign up – Racquet Club membership not required. For members, there's more good news in the form of on-site pickleball clinics that debut this summer after a pilot program in June confirmed the interest of members in supporting professional instructors offering small-format instruction at affordable fees. Single and series clinics will be offered for all levels of players. These will be available to members only –yet another reason to "join the club" now more than 500 members strong. Monthly Pickleball Play and Stays on the first Saturdays of the month (weather permitting) give members the chance to play, mingle, and also play cornhole on the lawn behind the Clubhouse – good practice for our month-long cornhole competition that will fill the September calendar. Stay tuned for a report on the Women's Pickleball Tournament in the August edition. There are six months of activities remaining in 2024 – Join the Racquet Club … just for the fun of it!
