60 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | JULY 2024 Well it looks like the cold weather has broken. We are probably now starting to think about the weather being too hot. Also, by the time you are reading this, we have probably changed the start time for shuff leboard to 8 am on Monday and Saturday mornings. I will have sent out an email to everyone on my roster to alert them of the time change when it was ready to happen. A great way to start getting some fresh air, exercise, and socialization is to come out and join our group for some shuff leboard. We play at the new courts at The Lodge behind the swimming pool and next to the paddle tennis courts. We enjoy our own quiet area in which we now play. Shuff leboard is an easy game to learn and anyone can quickly become proficient at this activity. Our games usually last about an hour and we choose up different teams each time that we play. This allows us to keep the competition challenging and the games more interesting. We play for fun, but of course everyone likes to win. We have no losers, only non-winners. We have a great group of players who play regularly, but we are always looking for new players. So if anyone is interested in joining a fun activity with lots of friendly residents, please just show up on a Monday and/or Saturday morning before 8 am. We will give you an introduction to shuff leboard if you have never played, or a refresher, if needed. If you have any questions, or concerns, please contact me. Otherwise, I hope to see you at the shuff leboard courts. ~ Marty Rotman, (310) 948-1693, mrtmj@aol.com Shuffleboard 4X4 FUN IN UTAH The weather is improving which allowed our group to spend a fantastic week in beautiful Hurricane, Utah, gateway to Zion National Park. In addition to exploring off-road trails in the southern Utah area, we spent some time on foot in Zion National Park, hiking the stunning Canyon Overlook, Emerald Pools, and River Walk Trails. Zion was Utah's first National Park and its massive sandstone cliffs of pink and red are an amazing sight. The park is beautiful, boasts a rich history, and present-day visitors will not be disappointed as Zion offers a wide variety of activities for both thrill-seekers and nature buffs. We also visited the historic ghost town of Grafton, Utah, located just south of the park. Established in 1861, it is said to be the most photographed ghost town in the West and was featured in several movies, most notably the classic Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. There were several refurbished buildings still present, as well as the cemetery which had a few headstones that actually read "Killed by Indians." Gorgeous, quiet, and away from the crowds is the Smithsonian Butte Backcountry Byway, which is favored by locals. We traveled the 9.25-mile dirt road between Rockville and Apple Valley, Utah, through the Virgin River f loodplain, juniper pines, and sagebrush. Spectacular views along the route included Smithsonian Butte, Vermilion Cliffs, and the sandstone pinnacles of Zion National Park. A special shout-out to The Saint George Jeepers who welcomed us to join them on one of their planned runs. They were more than happy to lead us through the Warner Valley while sharing the history of their backyard playground with us along the way. It was a great trail and, although it was a little demanding with lots of hills and deep sand, our two groups combined created a convoy of 25 vehicles. Nobody got stuck and not a single tow strap was needed! However, if any unfortunate soul finds themselves in a tight spot, Matt's Off-Road Recovery is in Hurricane and does much of the vehicle recovery needed on Sand Mountain and Sand Hollow State Park. He graciously allowed us to tour the yard and business. You can view his amazing videos on YouTube. Thank you also to Matt and Christy Frymire for inviting our group to their RV resort for a spectacular dinner and margaritas. If you'd like to join us on some adventures, our meetings are on the second Tuesday of the month at RCN Main Room, and we go 4x4ing the following Thursday. ~ Scott Snyder 4x4 Seasons 25 vehicle convoy with the Saint George Jeepers through Warner Valley Tour of Matt's Off Road Recovery yard.
