50 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | JULY 2024 TOPS Here it is July and the days are getting warmer and warmer. Luckily it cools down at night to a comfortable temperature. The Italian American Club met last month and played Pictionary. The drawings were a test of our creativity and ability to get the answer to our team members. We had a lot of fun getting together and visiting with our friends and competing with bragging rights on "who was the best team." Our next meeting of the club is July 11 at 6 pm in The Courts Clubhouse. If you haven't been attending the club meetings regularly, you should know you are missed. We are looking for suggestions from members on what you would like to see at our meetings. There are no bad ideas, so if you have something in mind, suggest it for one of the club's events. Contact Barbara Dipoma, Anita Vasquez, or Jerry Monahan with your ideas. The Italian American Club consists of residents of all backgrounds. The club is open to all residents of Four Seasons. You do not have to be Italian to join our group or come to our meetings. We would like you to come visit with us. Please stay safe during the summer season and the hot weather that is coming. If you're out walking in our community, stay hydrated. ~ Barbara Dipoma, (805) 377-2616, and Jerry Monahan, (951) 212-8898 Italian American Club Yes, we had team races with frozen peas, and this month we are learning about legumes. This vegetable family includes beans, peas, and lentils. They are packed with nutritional goodness and are a great source of fiber and proteins. They have no cholesterol and are an excellent source of potassium, iron, folic acid, and magnesium. When compared to meat, legumes score higher in nutrition because of their protein, complex carbohydrates, and healthy fat. Often people do not like eating beans because of what they do to their gastrointestinal system. To reduce gas, rinse the legumes well. Removing any slimy coating will wash away the gas-forming carbohydrates. Some legumes are black beans, black eyed peas, chickpeas (garbanzo beans), cannellini beans, edamame, fava beans, lentils, and red kidney beans. The group found yummy recipes for black bean burgers, corn salad with white beans, Mediterranean chickpea salad, and even fudgy black bean brownies. You may find that a group like TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) can help you as well. We meet on Tuesdays at 8:30 am in the Ballroom.
