34 | THE COLONY NEWS | AUGUST 2024 | Our July Paddle Tournament was played on a very hot Friday morning. We have a tough crowd at the courts, nothing stops us! Kris Smith/Faber kindly hosted our breakfast table. After battling not only the heat but also some tough competition, the players with the most games were Lisa Otten and Bruce Ray. Great play, you two! The Racquet Club will have a dinner in August, so be sure and save the date of Saturday, Aug. 10. It will be held in the Auditorium. For those of you interested in tennis or in paddle tennis, please come down to the courts. We would love to meet you! Tennis for women is on Monday and Wednesdays at 7:30 am. For tennis information, call Jeanne Bender at 949-295- 5412; for paddle tennis, call Karen Nichols at 619-550-8194. Clogging is a form of American Folk Dance with taps on the shoes. It's great fun, and it is a wonderful way to exercise your body and brain. As an added benefit, studies show that dancing is a major tool in the fight against Alzheimer's and dementia. Class is every Tuesday from 4:30 to 6 pm in the Auditorium and only $5 per class. Our instructor will be back from summer break starting Tuesday, Sept. 3, and once again will offer a FREE one-session beginners class from 4:30 to 5:15 pm, so that you can "try before you buy." The beginners class is only offered in September and January. Don't worry about shoes; our instructor will loan clogging shoes until you decide whether you want to buy your own. If you're interested or have questions, please call me at the above number. Racquet Club By Karen Nichols, 619-550-8194 Clogging Classes By Mary Seifert, 951-304-3503 Good news for all singles in The Colony: Here's a dinner you don't have to cook! Instead, just bring your own beverage and come and meet new people or old friends for dinner and entertainment. We meet the second Monday of every month at 5 pm in the Auditorium. And no, this isn't a dating club. This is for socializing without a partner — and for hoping to win the 50/50 raffle, of course! What's new: The group is changing. We're focusing on finding sources of good food for the dinners, and good entertainment for after the dessert. There is so much talent in and around The Colony! Are you a member of a group that performs inside or outside The Colony? Does your grandchild perform in a dance group? A choir? Are you working up an act to perform in Vegas? Here is your opportunity to show off! We are interested in about a half hour or so of entertainment at 6:45 pm on a Monday. Is your "act" too short for 30 minutes? Combining it with another group may be the answer. For instance, in October the Rockerettes will be performing the two dances they will do at the October Talent Show. But since their dances are each only three minutes long, they are joining forces with the Doo Wops for the Singles dinner entertainment. August's dinner will be Monday, Aug. 12, and tickets need to be purchased at the front desk by Monday, Aug. 5. For convenience, many of us bring our checks for the following month's dinner and put them in the box as we check in to the dinners. If this will be your first visit, we have a greeter to seat you, and this first dinner is HALF PRICE ($10). Since the year is half over, membership dues ($20 annually) will be prorated accordingly should you decide to join. Any questions? Call Paula Parra at 949-888-6550. We'll be looking for you! Colony Singles By Jan Foster Escape the heat and join us at ping pong in the air-conditioned Auditorium. It's fun, social, and we have friendly to competitive play (not your grandma's ping pong). If you haven't played in a long time, no problem, we can help you get your game back. All levels welcome. No paddle required. We play Wednesday, Friday and Sunday from 1 to 4 pm.
