As we celebrate approximately 20 years of scrapbooking with Sun Lakers, I would like to recognize the founder of our group, Dot Kowalski. She started meeting with fellow scrappers in her home, where like-minded friends got together to work on preserving memories in their albums. As the group grew, they eventually moved into the Main Clubhouse where they had more room to work. When I joined this group about 14 years ago, I remember being introduced to all the wonderful ladies and wondering how in the world I would ever remember who belonged to what name. Everyone was so nice and welcoming. They continued to meet weekly and the second Monday of each month, they would either go on a little excursion somewhere, or celebrate birthdays at various restaurants. They had a wonderful holiday party every December and the photo (below, left) is the first party I attended with this group. Our founder, Dot, is the second from the left, in the top row. Sadly, many of those pictured have either passed or moved away, but a couple are still around and still attending our meetings. Since then, we have had many new gals join us and we have become a very tight knit group. A few years ago, we changed the name of the group from Scrapbooking to Paper Crafting, only because we wanted to let others know that not only do we continue to scrapbook, but we do much more than that. We make cards, tags, books, and have added monthly make 'n take projects, which could be almost anything. Sometimes, gals bring in their crocheting, knitting, or drawing and painting projects to work on in the company of their fellow crafters. We share supplies or gift no longer used or needed items from our overflowing stashes, which is always fun. We continue to have monthly luncheons in our Restaurant, celebrating birthdays with either handmade or store-bought birthday cards along with a dessert provided by the birthday ladies. Our August schedule looks like this: Monday meetings on Aug. 5, 19, 26 from 1 to 3 pm. The second Monday, Aug. 12, we will meet from 11 am to 1 pm. We convene in the Main Clubhouse Multipurpose Room. The August lunch is scheduled for Thurs., Aug. 8. We will be at the far end of the Restaurant, unless otherwise notified. Contacts are Elaine Perkins at (951) 334-3119 or Sallie Flesher at (951) 902-9768. Paper Crafting 28 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | AUGUST 2024 | Fiber Artists The Fiber Arts Group welcomes all knitters, crocheters, and needleworkers to the North Clubhouse on Mondays at 12:30 pm, (except on the third Monday of the month, when we meet at 11:30 am. On the second Monday we share our extra yarn and supplies and on the last Monday of the month we share a potluck lunch. We are still making blankets for Kaiser Hospital in Fontana for terminally-ill adult patients and babies in the nursery, delivering them about four times a year. There are no dues and we love new members, so come join us! For more information, call Diane at (801) 367-5999 or Carol at (404) 245-6939.
