Art Lovers The Oceanside Museum of Art is the gem of North County. It is not just an art gallery but is an invaluable resource for the whole community. It provides a chance for up-and-coming regional artists to showcase their work and to be reviewed by their artist peers. OMA has several offsite venues to serve the community such as OMA West at the Seabird Resort and collaborates with the Front Porch Gallery and Ashton Gallery. Special events like their Summer Art Camp for kids, Street Level Music, concerts on the patio that celebrate new exhibitions, Plein Air painting sessions at Oceanside Harbor, lectures and workshops by noted art historian, Robin Douglas, Art Making classes for adults "and" auctions are just a few of the many services that the Oceanside Museum of Art provides. Oceanside Museum of Art (OMA) is a non -profit organization that began providing exhibitions and public programs in 1995 as part of their mission to bring people together to explore the art and stories of Southern California artists. With the support of the Oceanside City Council and City staff, the lease for the renowned Irving Gill Building, the historic site of the Oceanside City Hall, was approved and a home for the museum was established. Following a renovation of the interior of the Gill Building, OMA formally opened its doors on October 6, 1997. In 2008, OMA completed a contemporary, three-level 15,000 square foot expansion, designed by noted architect Fredrick Fisher. The new building merged seamlessly into the original 5,000 square-foot Irving Gill modernist building. The Art Lovers Club is pleased and proud to support the Oceanside Museum of Art and we love our visits there which are led by their very knowledgeable docents. We especially enjoyed the works of the Allied Craftsman of San Diego, the oldest professional organization of craft artists in Southern California. More Disruption: Representational Art in Flux is another fascinating exhibit. The Museum Store at OMA features original work by exhibiting artists, artisan wares from local makers, exclusive OMA merchandise, jewelry, books, and more. And by the way, senior admission to the museum is only $8, annual membership, a tax deductible $55 — real bargains! In today's world where everything you hear is about global warming and all the negative impact it is having on the environment, one practice that is sustainable and environmentally friendly is gardening. Not only does gardening connect us with nature, but it can reduce our carbon footprint by growing our own food and promoting biodiversity. The OHCC Garden Club is pleased to present our August speaker, Lynlee Austell-Slayter, who will be speaking on Edible Landscapes and Sustainability. Lynlee Austell-Slayter is an MBA, a UCCE Master Gardener and Sustainable Landscape Expert. Lynlee will present ways to sustainability in our landscapes, giving joy to all who live, visit and work therein. Creating a sustainable landscape can be rather simple, while keeping it sustainable requires sustainable maintenance practices. These techniques save time, money and habitat while practicing conscience stewardship of our environment and of those we employ to help us in our gardens. Lynlee will discuss materials and methods for decreasing inputs into our landscape while getting more out of them. The Aug. 14 meeting will be held in Abravanel Hall. Refreshments and social time is 9:30 am and the meeting begins at 10 am. If you have any excess plants or cuttings to share, please leave them at the table at the side entrance. Feel free to take what you need. "Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree long ago." - Warren Buffett. Written by Jan Vaccaro Garden Club
