10 | Four Seasons Hemet Herald | AUGUST 2024 | Name: ____________________________________________________________________________________ Address: ___________________________________________________________________________________ Phone: ____________________________________________________________________________________ FREE SUNDAY BRUNCH FOR TWO AT THE BISTRO Not valid on holidays or special events. Limit ONE ENTRY per residence per month As I sit in my air conditioned room staring at my computer, I give thanks for that wonderful device that is caressing me with the much needed cool breeze – plus, the fact that we have made it through July which greeted us like a burning blow torch. That's one down and only three more hot months to go, so keep cool and hydrated! The Bid Whist Plus group has been selling tickets since the middle of June for their two-day Festival on Aug. 3 and 4. Most of you have your tickets already. Following with their theme and as they requested, Francisco will be making a special Puerto Rica stew and Plantains & Tostones for a change up of taste. For the unadventurous, he also will have meatloaf and pulled pork for both days. Our usual Sunday Brunch will happen on the 11th, and being that August has an extra Friday, we can all look forward to that special of barbecued chicken and ribs buffet on the 30th. Debbie Bygland is our lucky winner for the Bistro's "Free Brunch for Two" and my "Thanks" to the puller of said ticket, Karen Landa. The drawing was done at the June Board meeting. Wishing you all a wonderful summer and safe travels if you are planning away trips. That's me, Patt double "T" Bistro Committee Summer is now in full swing! Typically, August is the hottest month of the year. To cope with the heat, here are some recommendations for gardens – and gardeners. Recommendations for gardeners: • Venture outside early in the day when it's coolest • Wear a hat and apply sunscreen. Like our plants, we need to keep cool and hydrated so be sure to drink plenty of water • If you don't already have one, install a weather-based automated drip system for shrubs, trees and flowering plants • Water in the early morning. This gives the plants time during the day to dry off. Watering at night isn't ideal because the moisture can encourage fungal diseases • Water deeply, saturating the entire root zone. Watering less often but for longer periods of time encourages roots to reach down for water • If you have a lawn, check sprinkler heads for clogs and verify that they are pointed in the proper direction Recommendations for plants: • Maintain mulch around heat-sensitive plants and those in direct sunlight. A three- to four-inch layer of mulch helps keep roots cool and conserves moisture • Water containers and hanging baskets more often. It is easy to tell if they need water - poke your finger into the soil: if it feels dry, it needs watering • Watch for wilting. With excess heat, move pots into shady and cooler areas • For continued color, deadhead flowering perennials and annuals. This keeps your garden tidy and prolongs the blooming season • As blooms peter out, you may be tempted to add some color to your garden. Give these heat-loving flowering plants a try: Zinnias, Cosmos, Lantana, Periwinkle (vinca), verbena, and Portulaca Now that you have been working hard in your garden, it is time for a little fun!
