| OHCC LIVING | SEPTEMBER 2024 | 43 As is the case every month, there is so much to share about our wonderful club. We continue to grow. As of July 31, we can boast of having 282 paid members. Also, through the end of July, the club has sent 66 boats out to sea for a host of activities including several training sails as part of our second mates training program; lunch and happy hour dock and dine sails, beach sails and Radys Shell evening wine, dinner and music sails. With demand so high, I will be shocked if we don't have over 100 sails under our belt by the end of the year. e Club's second and first Mate training program has been a great success. e Club's Training Coordinator, Dave Ramgren, has created an in-the-classroom and on-the-water program. Of nearly a dozen trainees enrolled, several graduates have been recognized and added to the Club's roster of Mates. It has been so heartening to see the enthusiasm of so many of our members participating in the program and in Dave and Fleet Captain Charlie Cappello's commitment to "training from within." More graduates are expected soon. Could this be the start of Ocean Hills Country Club's own maritime university? We now have six crews training for the September Regatta. Course rules have been set out and all boats and crews will be on level footing – may the best crew win! Of course, as we approach the Autumn months, planning is stepping up for the Sailing Club's grand gala "Roaring Twenties" dressy dinner dance party in November. e Club's Social Director, Laura Carlson, will undoubtedly outdo herself once again in setting the scene for our time-machine trip into the past. e ladies in their beautiful flapper dresses and the men in their pinstriped suits, wide ties and spats will be a sight for all times. I hope all of us are practicing our Charleston dance moves. Written by Commodore Skip Maniscalco Edited by Kathy C. Maniscalco Sailing Club If you are looking for a way to reduce stress and anxiety, and a way to increase flexibility and balance, then Tai Chi exercise may be just what the doctor ordered. Originally, Tai Chi was developed for self-defense, but has evolved into a graceful form of exercise. Some describe it as meditation in motion because it promotes serenity through gentle, flowing movements. Tai Chi is an ancient Chinese tradition that, today, is practiced as a graceful form of exercise. It involves a series of movements performed in a slow, focused manner and accompanied by deep breathing. Tai Chi is a noncompetitive, self-paced system of gentle physical exercise and stretching. Each posture flows into the next without pause, ensuring that your body is in constant motion. Tai Chi is low impact and puts minimal stress on muscles and joints, making it generally safe for all ages and fitness levels. It is especially suitable for older adults who otherwise may not exercise. e benefits of Tai Chi may include: decreased stress, improved mood, increased energy, improved flexibility, balance, and agility, and improved muscle strength. OHCC offers a free Tai Chi class each Tuesday and ursday, 9 to 10 am, in the Abravenal Hall. Each class is led by a video presentation that lasts about 45 minutes.
