6 | OHCC LIVING | SEPTEMBER 2024 | e California Great Shakeout Annual Drill will take place on urs., Oct. 17. Across the state, emergency responders will practice their skills in responding to and managing a variety of situations based on the occurrence of a major earthquake. e SERT Emergency Response Team will be participating in the Drill here in OHCC by putting our skills to the test. We ask that all residents hang out their OK/HELP signs (from 7 am to 3 pm), in a place visible from the street, so our SERT ERT members can do their practice check. Please mark October 17 on your calendars. What you can do during the emergency drill! Check your emergency supplies • Do your flashlights work? • Replace batteries where necessary • Be sure you have at least six gallons of water per person • Stock up on non-perishable food, enough for 72 hours • Prepare your first aid kit to make sure you have everything you may need • Keep your Vial-of-Life form and Smart911.com medical information current • Update your emergency contacts list (phone numbers) Other things you can do • Do you have a "Go Bag" in case you must evacuate or temporarily live elsewhere? • Do you have 7-days of Rx and other supplements readily available? • Check your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors • Practice releasing your electric garage door and manually liing it Helpful Tips • ere is a 50/50 chance that an earthquake could happen at night while you are in bed. If so, stay in bed and put the pillow over your head to protect yourself. When the shaking stops, do you have a pair of slippers or flip flops under your bed to put on? ere is a possibility that you will have broken glass, and you don't want to cut your feet. • If there is someone else in the house check to make sure everyone is OK • Is your house structurally safe… check that there are no "major" cracks in the walls and the ceiling has not collapsed • Smell for natural gas. If you smell gas GET OUT of the house and call 911 from the middle of the street • Place your fire extinguisher in an easily accessible location • Put out your OK/HELP sign Try to stay calm and safe! We are all in this emergency together, and together we will get through it! SERT Emergency Response Team Drill By Tom Porter, President
