| THE COLONY NEWS | SEPTEMBER 2024 | 35 It was a tad toasty out for our August pickleball tournament, but as usual, it was so much fun! Probably one more month of hot weather, then we will hopefully get back to the beautiful mornings we are accustomed to. The game continues to pick up speed at a very rapid pace. There are lots of inquiries and even more new participants. Tina joined us for the first time and for a gal who has only been playing for a few weeks, she did great! Eric is a semi-regular player. However, this was his first "tournament" with us. Needless to say, he's hooked. There is always room for whomever would like to play, so please don't hesitate to give me a call, or simply head down to the courts any morning to join in the fun. We have paddles for you to use. And as always, there are no reservations needed. See you all in or around the kitchen (that's just a little pickleball lingo). Pickleball By Scott Ross, 310-213-3362 On Tuesday, Sept. 24, at 1 pm in the Annex, George Spiliotis, UCCE Master Gardener, will be giving a presentation on Welcoming Pollinators to Your Garden. Join us for a practical introduction to attracting pollinators to your garden by using unique and diverse native plants. Fall is the best time to plant natives, so it is a perfect time for learning. George will discuss reasons for planting native species, things to know and do before you plant, basic planning and design considerations, and planting and maintenance requirements. We will also have some native plants that you can touch, smell and learn about. A list of nurseries that carry native plants will also be available. The presentation is open to all Colony residents. It usually cools down by 5:30 pm when we get a bit of a breeze. Come on down and play a game or two, then hop in the pool and take a dip. We have tables and umbrellas, water, ice, food (bring a snack to share) or just come, watch and socialize. We start at 5 pm, play to about 7 pm, through September. Bocce By Jeanne Bender, 949-295-5412 Escape the heat and join us at ping pong in the air-conditioned Auditorium. It's fun, social, and we have friendly to competitive play (not your grandma's ping pong). If you haven't played in a long time, no problem, we can help you get your game back. All levels welcome.
