36 | THE COLONY NEWS | SEPTEMBER 2024 | DID YOU MISS IT? By Valorie Hillerich In the words of Mr. Rogers, "Won't you be my neighbor?" And in the words of The Colony, "Hey, let's meet our neighbors!" The Sunshine Committee, under Paula Thompson, Chair, has their "Meet Your Street" activity up and running. According to the "Meet Your Street" chairperson, Virginia Incorvia, this new event has become very successful over the course of just a few months. Block parties are popping up all over The Colony. And many streets are making it a quarterly gathering. Why "Meet Your Street?" The Colony has become so popular, we have many new residents who haven't had the chance to meet their neighbors. Paula Thompson came up with the idea of a "Meet Your Street" get-together after seeing so many people gathering outdoors during the Covid pandemic. At that time, getting together outside became a way for residents to reconnect with each other during a difficult time. Fast forward to today and we have MEET YOUR STREET! And it works! So many people have connected with old friends or made new ones and enjoyed food, beverages and fun in a casual, welcoming atmosphere. Some groups even meet offsite at a restaurant, park or the Clubhouse — any place to keep the party going. Have you met your neighbors? If you are interested in coordinating your street's event, TEXT or LEAVE A VOICEMAIL for Virginia at 619-992-8979 for more information. Virginia will provide you with a packet of goods and ideas to get you started. The theme is up to you. You can make it as casual or elaborate as you choose. It can tie in with a holiday, a Colony event (like the Patriotic Pup Parade), a birthday, or just your favorite day of the week. It can be potluck, happy hour only, an ice-cream social, or wherever your imagination takes you. Again, to get involved with your own "Meet Your Street" party, TEXT or LEAVE A VOICEMAIL for Virginia Incorvia at 619-992-8979 for more information. See you in the neighborhood! Meet Your Street Virginia Incorvia, the Sunshine Committee's "Meet Your Street" coordinator, hands over the chairperson role for Via Tonada to Michael Fisher. Residents set up chairs under a shade tree to enjoy the delicious potluck treats. e Via Tonada crowd gathers together to "Meet Your Street" and watch the Patriotic Pup Parade.
