| LIFE IN SOLERA | OCTOBER 2024 | 37 The flags were raised in September as follows: Labor Day, up on Sept. 30, Patriots Day, stay up; POW/MIA Day, stay up. The Flags were taken down on Sept. 23. There are no occasions in October to raise the Flags. Thank you to those few dedicated resident volunteers who are up "at the crack of dawn" on these special days to put up and take down our flags. Contact for the Flag Brigade – Nick Gercis, nick. gercis@gmail.com. Upcoming Flag Schedule: Veterans Day: Sat., Nov. 11; Pearl Harbor Day: Thurs., Dec. 7. To all veterans, THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE! Our care package program is always busy, but starting this September, it has been a NON-STOP process. At age 85, I have slowed down considerably. Thank goodness for the volunteers who help keep the program going. You are an essential part of the process of showing our service men and women our appreciation for keeping us safe and free. A big happening in September was the fundraiser garage sale. At the time of this writing, it hadn't even happened yet. Next month's article will give all the details. But, I can say thank you to Ron and Debbie Monroe for again hosting it at their Gleneagles home. Thanks to all, who donated the much needed items to sell. Thank you all, who worked so hard preparing for the sale and those who actually worked the sale itself. Now on to the next troop project, which started the very next Monday after the sale. That was meeting with the various club groups, to offer blank Christmas cards to those wishing to write cards to our service members. Should any of you wish to write cards, I have lots of blank cards, that you can pick up at my house. For any of you who know school teachers, this would be a worthy cause for their classes. Older students might actually write cards, while younger ones might like to draw pictures, etc. An important thing is, ALL written Christmas cards must be at my house no later than Sunday, December 1st. My plan is to package them on Dec. 2 and 3 for mailing. Military mail is always overwhelmed in December. On Sun., Nov. 10 at 2 pm in the Oakmont Clubhouse, we will be holding our second fundraiser to keep our project going. It will be musical and a very nice Sunday afternoon event. Please consider attending. Marty Mangan and my wife Linda have tickets for sale. The event notice is in this month's magazine. If you can make a gift basket or have any other suitable item for the raff le, please consider donating it. From now through Christmas, will be a very busy time for the Support Our Troops project. But, you have accomplished it for nineteen years, I have faith in you. Thank you for caring. ~ Jesse Donardt SUPPORT OUR TROOPS VETERAN ASSISTANCE FLAG BRIGADE Billy (Mitch) Mitchell is a resident and Veteran who has voluntarily worked with individuals and the Veterans Administration to assist Veterans in obtaining benefits.
