The month of October brings a lot of Halloween-themed events to the Clubhouse. Each year we plan some activity on Oct. 31. Halloween lands on a Thursday this year; we are planning to show the old thriller movie Psycho in the Clubhouse at 2 pm. Snacks and goodies will be provided, so wear a costume and plan to see staff in costume. Along with Halloween comes memories of trick or treating as a child and with our own families. This Recreation Director participated years ago in a contest sponsored by a kid's TV show called e Sally Starr Show, broadcasted on WFIL TV out of Philadelphia. Children were challenged to trick or treat in their neighborhoods, mine being Levittown, Pennsylvania. At that time, this development was one of the first track of homes in the country. When arriving at the front doors we were to say, "Trick or Treat" and then ask "Is this the Sally Starr house?" Well, after a time with over 100 homes asking that serious question what seemed a million times, this costumed witch was frustrated and exhausted. At the next house the BIG question was forgotten to be said, and anyone can guess what happened. This witch did not win the coveted 1960 Kenner Give-A-Show projector, including slides, and a young heart was forever broken… And this screw up comes to mind every Halloween. But this is not the end of the story. This old witch-ME-wrote an article for the San Diego Union Tribune, when they asked their subscribers to submit their favorite Halloween story. Needless to say, they liked the story but no prize, again! We are not forgetting the grandchildren and children of OHCC with our trick or treating event on Fri., Oct. 25 at the Clubhouse. Gather together for a parade, snacks, and off we go trick or treating to volunteer homes that want to see some happy faces. Sign-ups are being taken for homes and those interested in trick or treating. And the answer to getting a treat in the month of October is to say "Sally Starr" to the Clubhouse Front Desk upon approach. Only one per treater. The answer is "NO" as there will be no vintage 1960 Kenner Give-A-Show projectors given out, sorry about that. We have to watch our expenses. Clubs are now submitting forms for reserving space for 2025. Interest Groups forms will be available Oct. 15. This would include classes, card players, music groups, and the private rental forms will be available Dec. 15. The League of Women Voters will have a presentation on Mon., Oct. 14, in the Mykonos Room at 1 pm. They will review the upcoming issues for the Nov. 5 Presidential Election. LWV is a nonpartisan political organization that encourages informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy. Seating is limited for this event and sponsored by the Community Services Committee (CSC). We are happy to announce the arrival of our new Event Coordinator, Julie Van Dam. She is excited to join the team at Ocean Hills Country Club. She is originally from Salt Lake City, UT, although she has lived in California for longer than her time in Utah, so she has officially become a native. She loves to swim in the ocean with her friends and she is an avid puzzle player. Her Wordle streak is 123 days with 580 plays. Julie has an amazing family, including her talented chef husband and equally talented musician son. She looks forward to meeting everyone. Stop by her new office, that is now located off the Front Lobby entrance and introduce yourself. Sign-ups continue for the Fall Festival on Sat. Oct. 19, 9 am to 1 pm. We are looking for bakers, crafters, and garage sale sellers. Remember your junk is someone else's treasure. A hot dog lunch will be provided by our Garden Club for a mere $6. Come join us for our fun fall event! Treat someone to a stupid but clean joke: Question: What kind of pants do ghosts wear? Answer: BOO-jeans!
