4 SOLERA DIAMOND VALLEY | NOVEMBER 2024
anksgiving is a time when we can all reect on the past year.
We will enjoy our dinner and probably eat too much. We will also
watch football on TV or play games with the family. Did you ever
stop and think about how we got where we are? We are so blessed
as a country and have come so far; think about what our ancestors
went through to get us here. Here are some facts to think about.
1541 Spanish explorer Francisco Vasquez de Coronado and his
men held a feast of prayer and thanksgiving in Palo Duro Canyon,
Texas.
1621 e Pilgrims of Plymouth Colony in Massachusetts have
a three-day feast with the Wampanoag Indians to celebrate their
rst successful harvest.
1789 President George Washington issues the rst national
thanksgiving proclamation calling for a day of public thanksgiving
and prayer on November 26.
1863 President Abraham Lincoln declares the last ursday of
November as a National Day of anksgiving following a campaign
by magazine editor Sarah Josepha Hale.
1941 Congress passes a law establishing the fourth ursday of
November as the ocial date of anksgiving.
So, as we enjoy ourselves, let's try to remember those who went
before us and paved the way.
