46 | LIFE IN SOLERA | NOVEMBER 2024 | Fall is here and the weather is cooling off. So if you're looking for an activity to keep you moving in the cooler weather, let me suggest Pickleball. It is a fun and easy game to learn. There are plenty of friendly people who play and are willing to help you learn the rules and skills needed to be successful. This month, I thought we would talk about some of the rules of pickleball. The toughest rule is the kitchen rule. The kitchen is a rectangular area that is close to the net. You can stand in the kitchen, but you cannot hit a ball while you're in the kitchen unless it bounces in the kitchen first. It sounds complicated, but it really isn't. Once you have played a few times, it becomes easier to understand. Another concern is the serve. Before you serve, it is polite to announce the score loud enough so the other team can hear. It is also polite to wait for them to acknowledge that they agree that the score is correct. The score consists of three parts: your score, your opponents score, and which server you are. At the start of the game the first server is a number two. It is hard to explain why but let's just say it's a rule and that's what's what. So, for instance at the beginning the score is 0-0-2, which means neither team has a point and I am server number two. When that team loses the serve their opponent on the right side becomes server number one. They continue to serve until they lose the point. Then the other person on their team becomes server number two. So for instance, a score of 1-0-1 means we have one point, the other team has no points and I am server number one. The first team to score 11 points wins, however you must win by two points as in tennis or volleyball. YouTube is a wonderful place to watch videos that'll help you understand pickleball before you come out for the first time. Make sure you have court shoes and not running shoes. If you're not sure you're ready to play yet we have paddles that we can lend you for the morning. Please remember: "NO BALL IS WORTH THE FALL!"
