One of the prime benefits of serving our country that Veterans
enjoy is the appreciation expressed by our citizens. Most of the
time it is a simple "Thank you for your service" spoken in passing.
Occasionally, it is a short chat about when and where you served.
There is a small group of talented ladies who go a giant step beyond
these simple greetings.
Quilts of Valor Foundation began in 2003 with a dream, literally
a dream. Founder Catherine Roberts' son Nat was deployed in Iraq.
"I could see his war demons clustered around, dragging him down
into an emotional gutter. Then, as if viewing a movie, I saw him in
the next scene wrapped in a quilt. His whole demeanor changed
from one of despair to one of hope and well-being. The quilt had
made this dramatic change." The message of my dream was: Quilts
= Healing.
In 2005 a Vietnam veteran organized a group of ladies to make
quilts for veterans so they would always remember that their
sacrifices would not be forgotten. These quilts known as Quilts
of Honor (now known as Quilts of Valor) have become a universal
symbol and token of thanks, solace, and remembrance for those who
serve in harm's way to protect and defend our loves and freedoms.
The quilts, made by three talented ladies, are made in three layers
representing our communities' comfort and healing, and the strength
of support for veterans. All veterans are eligible to receive a quilt.
Our Veterans Club has application forms for interested Veterans.
Three of our Veterans Club members, Lizzy Gallegos, Robert
Gardner, and Len Tavernetti, received their quilt at a ceremony in
June at Lizzy's home. ~ Len Tavernetti
