DID YOU MISS IT?

Did you know that on Sept. 8, 1965, a call for would-be actors/
musicians appeared in the trade publications Daily Variety and
e Hollywood Reporter? It read: "Auditions for Folk & Roll
Musicians/Singers for acting roles in new TV series. Want 4 insane
boys, ages 17-21. Spirited types who have courage to work."
Out of 437 applicants, four young men were selected. One
year later, on Sept. 12, 1966, e Monkees debuted on NBC. With
a successful TV show and concerts all over the US, there was no
stopping this cultural phenomenon. According to an article in
Music Enthusiast, the Monkees saw Jimi Hendrix play at Monterey
Pop Festival, loved him, and invited him to open on their tour.
Hendrix thought they were a joke, but he joined as their opening
act anyway. He quit the tour after seven dates of hearing "We Want
Davy! We want Davy!"
Fast forward to September 28, 2024, where the Monkeemania
tribute band made their impressive debut in front of a sold-out
crowd at The Colony! Of course they opened with Hey Hey, We're
the Monkees! And they followed this up with many of their top
ten hits. But a good ol' fashioned sing-along had the crowd on
their feet with I'm a Believer and Daydream Believer. Yes, we were
believers! Hopefully, they'll take the Last Train to the Colony and
come back for another Pleasant (Valley) Sunday!
