| OHCC LIVING | NOVEMBER 2024 | 41 Racquet Club How often have you been part of a conversation about OHCC that included some version of "I'm so lucky to have found this place! I couldn't be happier!"? With the world around us often too hot or too cold, too wet or too dry, our little corner of Oceanside is "just right." Racquet Club members are thankful for first-rate sports courts, the creative leadership team whose boundless energy finds new ways to expand social opportunities for all members — those who play and those who prefer spectating — and for the steady — and growing — group of volunteers who put it all together. Drum roll, please! Playing under the moniker "Better than Most," the cornhole foursome of Ed Congel, Alex Martinez, Greg Gamble, and Patrick Esquibel captured the Baggin' & Braggin' Tournament crown, a new name ("Better than All the Rest") and, of course, boasting rights until next year. Team "Boss of the Toss" with Darla Haubner, Suzanne Forman, Michael Katz, and Sid Saltzman earned second place. The wrap-up hot dog social on the Lanai was lively! Herb and Gerry Livsey were the inspiration behind October's 2024 Mixed Doubles Pickleball Tournament and our vibrant pickleball community is their living legacy at OHCC. Twenty-four teams competed across three divisions in the Inspiration Games. Unexpected upsets made for particularly good pickleball watching in Advanced play. On Court 5, renamed Livsey Championship Court for the occasion, Allison Womack and Harvey Bernstein earned top honors and Debbie Machnick and Bob James finished second. High Intermediates Ann Rike and Ralph Osborn battled back from a 0-6 deficit to beat new residents Lenni Navarro and Tom Perrotti in the finals. Low Intermediates played a round robin with Jenny Campa and David Lopez capturing 1st place and Carol and Richard Davis coming in second. Mary Blackman and Phylis Lemberg directed the smooth-running tournament and its many volunteers; Karena Abrams and Diana Haas coordinated the social catered by Good Belly Deli. October's Play & Stay became Oktoberfest with hosts John Gildner and Bob James enticing pickleball players off the courts with oom- pah music, grilled brats, sauerkraut, potato salad, pretzel bites, and steins of near-beer. Tom Haas manned the grill while cornhole played out across the lawn. Our annual meeting and election are Thursday, November 7th in Abravanel Hall. Social at 4 pm, Meeting/election 4:30–5:30 pm. Bob James will recap the year and preview plans for 2025. Food and drink? Of course! Please attend. Your voice and your vote count!
