Art Lovers The Craftsman Museum in Carlsbad is a most interesting place to visit as several of our Art Lovers discovered. The collection includes approximately 500 working miniature engines as well as models of aircraft, automobiles, and other objects. The wide range of craftsmen honored here have used their trade skills to produce miniature works of art. Frequently, this work involves building exact scale models of a variety of objects, often done simply for the love of the work. One of the best examples of this type of art can be seen in the showcased 1/6 scale Duesenberg, a complete car in miniature which actually runs. Created by Louis Chenot, it has over 6,000 parts (966 in the wheels and more than 300 in the head). Most fasteners had to be handmade of stainless steel. The group especially enjoyed the miniature doll houses from several eras. Next, was a visit to the Wm. Cannon Gallery in Carlsbad. The exhibit featured contemporary dimensional fiber works by over 25 national artists juried by Fiber Art Now, the premier magazine dedicated to fine fiber artworks. The materials can consist of natural or synthetic fiber and other components, such as fabric or yarn, weaving, basketry, sculpture, felting, surface design, knitting, wearables, and mixed media. Of particular interest were the clothing items above that are fashioned of copper wire. Another fascinating installation consists of dozens of pieces of denim fabric hanging on strings from the ceiling at different levels creating a multitude of shadows which danced on the floor. We'll be reviewing our October bus trip to the Getty Center in Los Angeles as well as our plans for our annual Holiday Luncheon on Dec. 3. Our guest speaker will be photographer Amy Forsythe who covered the war in Afghanistan. Our speaker for Nov. 19 will be Alyson Benford, please take look at her Bio: Alyson Benford Blum is a San Diego-based artist and educator who loves turning ordinary materials into beautiful works of art. As a busy artist, educator, and mother of two, Alyson enjoys the flexibility and family friendliness of working with "fibers" such as yarns and fabric, which are so portable she carries them around in her purse. Her fiber-based works here include ribbon-wrapped lanterns and yarn-wrapped branches that rest in boxes on the wall and tied fabric curtain that hangs from the ceiling to create a soft, warm and welcoming space. Alyson ingeniously uses materials in original ways. Her looms are made from found branches and recycled fishing nets. Among the materials available for weaving are repurposed fabrics and yarn, ribbons cut from recycled sari dresses and collected natural materials. Alyson's artworks are like the lessons she creates for adult and child audiences: rich, layered and resourceful.
