| OHCC LIVING | NOVEMBER 2024 | 29 As the chill in the air gets chillier, maybe it's time to garden inside. The OHCC Garden Club November meeting will be "Happy Houseplants, Happy Home." Studies have shown there are many ways houseplants may improve your health and wellbeing. Come learn how to be a better houseplant parent. Our speaker is Linda Stewart, a Master Gardener since 2010. Linda is a retired Registered Nurse where she nurtured babies and moms and when she retired Linda turned to nurturing plants. You will learn about the best environment for your houseplants, how to choose the right ones and how to care for and prevent common problems. Caring for houseplants is a hobby for all seasons. The Nov. 13 meeting will be held in Abravanel Hall, refreshments and social time is 9:30 am and the meeting begins at 10 am. If you have any excess plants or cuttings to share, please leave them at the table at the side entrance, feel free to take what you can use. The Garden Club will again donate the beautiful wreath to the OHCC Veterans Day celebration. Save the date for the Garden Club Holiday Luncheon on Dec. 11. Written by Jan Vaccaro Garden Club The Genealogy Interest Group is a growing group of individuals who want to find out about their heritage and their ancestry. Curiosity about those who came before and formed us is important. The group provides tools to do your research and help in getting started. For the experienced we can offer suggestions to break through the brick walls of past generations. Meeting with others looking in the same geographical areas is a great help. We have both Apple computers and PC's in the computer room. It is helpful if you want to bring your own laptop. We will meet for a Help Session on Thurs., Nov. 14. Newcomers are welcome. All sessions can be seen on the TAG calendar. We are happy to offer the World Explorer version of Ancestry.com free of charge in the computer room. This program would cost an individual over $100 a month. We also offer the Family Tree Maker on several of the computers in the lab. A family tree can be started and compiled with either or both of these programs with many hints to assist in your research. Coordinators are Dorothy Miller, Shirley Rock and Peggy Singh. We invite you to participate in two important decisions and need a quorum of members for the votes. We'll be voting on the election of officers for the two-year term 2025-2026, and which animal charities to donate excess funds for the holidays. Effective January 2025, membership dues will be $10 per household. By paying now memberships extend through 2025. Checks may be placed in PLC file at the Clubhouse front desk. This is our fourth year of "Presents for Pets." The Helen Woodward Animal Center pairs year-round with Meals on Wheels to provide "AniMeals" — specifically packaged food for pets of Meals on Wheels clients. The Pet Lovers Club has a free separate event once a year for those clients to allow them to give holiday presents to their pets. After our first year, MoW said they had always wanted to provide this service for their pet owners and didn't know how to do it. Our "Pet Presents" come solely from the OHCC Pet Lovers Club, and the gifts brought great joy to the clients. Meals on Wheels provides us with a wish list from their AniMeals clients. We put items we collect in gift bags for MoW staff to match with clients' wish lists. Checks made out to PLC are used to buy larger items and services those pet parents cannot afford. Ellen will have sent out the wish lists around Oct. 20. Gifts and checks may be brought to the meeting or left at Ellen's home. Our guest speaker will be from "Love on a Leash." This local non- profit trains pets and their owners to provide comfort to people in schools and nursing homes. Written by Ellen Kippel & Karen Hasting
