Newbies is the official welcoming group for Ocean Hills Country Club residents (owners and renters). We have quarterly gatherings where new and established residents can meet, mingle and get to know each other. The gatherings are loosely structured and provide new residents with an opportunity to introduce themselves. Our goal is to have you walk away with new friends and a feeling of community. There are many activities available at OHCC and you can participate as much or as little as you choose. The choices are nearly endless: golf, racquet sports, swimming, bocce ball, crafts, music, billiards, Mahjong games, card games and more. OHCC offers about 37 official clubs and many other special interest groups. OHCC is truly a year-round summer camp for adults. This month we are spotlighting new residents, Joe and Beth Grohovsky, who moved into their new Dassia Way home on June 10, 2024. Joe is originally from Youngstown, OH and Beth is from Scotch Plains, NJ. They have lived in various places over the years, including Sydney, Australia; Salt Lake City, UT; Yardley, PA; and most recently Temecula. Joe and Beth met in New Jersey through their mutual involvement with local rugby clubs. They have been married since 1988 and have two daughters and one young grandson. They chose OHCC because of its proximity to their kids as well as the vibrant lifestyle and beautiful location the community provides. Both Joe and Beth are sports enthusiasts and very into fitness. They have both retained a keen interest in rugby and enjoy the fact that Southern California is home to some of the finest rugby clubs in the country. Joe currently works as a software salesman, and Beth regularly enjoys local beach walks. Both are having a wonderful time exploring the various clubs within the OHCC community and continue to marvel at how friendly their new neighbors are. Welcome, Joe and Beth! The next Newbies gathering will be held on Dec. 22 from 2 to 5 pm in Abravanel Hall. Details will be publicized well in advance. According to a source, many club members on the trip have since embraced the seafood diet (see food and eat it.) The beachfront camping on the Sea of Cortez was a unique experience along with the local arts and crafts. Many thanks to our Rally Coordinators Sue & Sal Pellerito. After returning home from Mexico, there was just enough time to do a load or two of wash, pick up supplies, top off the fuel tank and then off to Bonelli Bluffs in San Dimas, California. San Dimas is a community which dates back to 1826, when the first American Explorers headed by Jedediah Strong Smith first camped at a Cienega (marshy area), later called Mud Springs. In 1837 two Spanish Dons, Señor Ignacio Palomares and Señor Ricardo Vejar came into these vast semi-arid and wilderness pastures raising herds of cattle. The favorite mythical story is that outlaws operating from inaccessible haunts in the San Dimas Canyon, often made raids on these cattle. I am happy to report that to my knowledge, no such raids were experienced by club members during their stay, just a lot of food, fun, fellowship and a tour of SoFi Stadium and Rubel Castle. December is our annual holiday party with this year's celebration theme, "Comfort and Joy" to be held in Abravanel Hall, catered by Flavor Chef. Get ready for some great fun, fellowship, adult beverages and dancing to the music of "Gin 'n' Tonix." This will be a great time to kick off the holiday season and close out a great year of adventures. At the end of December Club Members will be back on the road again, heading north to the annual Rose Parade RV Rally in Pasadena for a five-day camping adventure led by Wagon Masters Barbara and Bob Becker. The itinerary includes delicious breakfasts, lunches and dinners, talented entertainment, day tours, decorating the Sierra Madre Float and lots of laughs and memories to take home. According to unconfirmed sources, Bob Becker will be a participant in the Southern California RV Kazoo Marching Band representing OHCC. A little-known fact is that Bob has been considered a Kazoo Savant since age four and the sounds of show tunes can often be heard coming from his motorhome in the RV lot during his hours of practice. To you and yours, the RV Club wishes you a very Merry Christmas, Happy Hannukah and a very happy and healthy New Year. God Bless America! Written by Marshall Kelsay
