| OHCC LIVING | DECEMBER 2024 |27 Art Lovers A busload of Art Lovers Club members and guests took the long trip to Los Angeles to visit the world-famous Getty Center. As visitors glide up in trams from the parking lot to the top of the hill which is 900 ft. above sea level, they glimpse views of the Center as well as the surrounding city. Along with the Getty Villa in Pacific Palisades, businessman and art collector J. Paul Getty's Trust established the Getty Center, a 24-acre campus located in the Santa Monica Mountains above the 405 Freeway. The J. Paul Getty Trust is the world's largest cultural and philanthropic organization dedicated to the visual arts. The $1.3 billion center opened to the public on Dec. 16, 1997 and is well known for its architecture, gardens, art from the Middle Ages to today as well as their stunning views of Los Angeles. Art Lovers Board member, Angie Babino reports that she and a small group started with a 45-minute tour, Lumen: e Art of Science and Light. The tour focused on beautiful objects from the Western European Medieval period that worked with and responded to light. Another exhibit, Ultra-Violet: New Light on Van Gogh's Irises shows how Van Gogh used what he knew about light in his paintings. Conservators and scientists working together harnessed the power of light with analytical tools that uncovered the artist's materials and working methods. They reveal how light has irrevocably changed some of the colors in Irises (see above). A painting we thought we knew so well has suddenly become quite unfamiliar. These paintings are displayed side–by-side to compare what they must have looked like originally before becoming faded. The exhibit Sculpting with Light: Contemporary Artists and Holography showed some amazing holograms that came to life as you passed by. Holograms are recordings of light waves and produce the magical illusion of three-dimensional objects floating in space. They were made possible by the invention of laser technology in the 1960s, and since then, many artists have experimented with this technique including John Baldessari, Louise Bourgeois, and Ed Ruscha. Many of the Getty Center exhibits revolved around the concepts of light, art, geometry and technology. Our visitors agreed that it was a fabulous trip and they would come back again. Yet, the varied collection creates a beautiful, cohesive display of the work of our featured artists. Please be aware that occasionally the art on exhibit is SOLD by the artist, thus finding a new home on the wall of the resident or guest who purchased it.
