38 | OHCC LIVING | DECEMBER 2024 | Walkers & Hikers Club As we enjoy the holidays with friends and families, The Walkers and Hikers Club has scheduled several events leading up to the joy of Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. 1). Dec. 1: Hike Black Mountain via Miners Ridge Loop in Poway. It is a 4.3-mile loop. An interesting fact about this hike is you can reach the summit while traversing a historic "miners ridge." This ridge was once used by early prospectors searching for gold in the area. There are stunning views of the landscape with diverse terrain. 2). Thurs., Dec. 12: Walk 4S Ranch Sports and Community Park. It is a 2.7-mile loop. The walking trails are noted for their accessibility and variety, offering a mix of easy, scenic loops that are perfect for casual strolls, runners and families. MARLA REITER, a true hiker, and one of our hike leaders, walked from Portugal to Spain in April of 2023. She will do a presentation for Club members interested in hearing about this Camino hike from France to Spain. The Camino de Santiago (the way of St. James). There are many different routes to get to Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, Spain. St. James' remains are buried there. The most popular and classic route is the French route. Marla did this route, 500 miles, walking from France into Spain. The Christian pilgrimage has been popular since 2010, when Martin Sheen and Emilio Estevez starred in a movie titled e Way. Although traditionally a Catholic or Christian pilgrimage, people of all religions walk the Camino (road/way) for various reasons, including religious, or health, or spiritual reasons. In the walk/hike you see a variety of landscapes, mountains, hills, vineyards. Those interested in the presentation, it is scheduled for Dec. 8. Submitted by Herb Livsey/VP The cold weather has not put a damper on members getting out sailing. There were six sails scheduled in November, and we have had a record 113 sails through the end of October. On top of that the club can boast its largest ever membership – now standing at 290. With the grand Roaring Twenties dinner/dance now behind us (still ahead of us as of this writing), hitting 300 members is definitely within range by year-end. The December Newsletter will highlight the grand gala. The last sail in October was a special club trip arranged by First Mate Harrison Miller for a group of 22 members who spent a delightful afternoon under sail on the Triton Catamaran cruising around San Diego Harbor. We all left the OHCC overf low parking lot heading to the Triton berthed on Shelter Island. After boarding, we all enjoyed a peaceful afternoon on the bay under sail with motors off. The Captain had us on a downwind tack with the jib and mains'l "wing on wing" – not an easy feat on such a large craft with only a Captain and Mate as crew. Following the day's sail, we adjourned to the Brigantine Restaurant for some scrumptious happy hour bites and beverages. We soon realized it was Halloween and completely dark outside.
