Here are some guidelines and safety tips for your home: • Keep emergency numbers on every phone; include re, police, your doctor(s), ambulance service, and the poison control hotline (1-800-222-1222). • Make sure your house number is visible from the street and lit at night. • Install smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors on every oor. Change batteries twice a year when you change your clocks for daylight saving time. • Eliminate clutter. Keep stairways and walkways clear of tripping hazards. • Have regular inspections for your furnaces, hot water heaters, and other gas appliances. • Never use kerosene or gas space heaters in unvented rooms, and never keep cars, motorcycles, or lawn mowers running in a closed or attached garage. • Be cautious when using ladders. Inspect for loose or worn parts. Use only on stable level ground, and don't overreach. • Wear protective footwear and eyewear when mowing the lawn. • Install decorative markers on glass doors so that people do not walk into them by mistake. Here are some statistics for burglaries and home res: In 2023, there were 250.7 burglaries per 100,000 people in the United States, which was an 8.1 percent decrease from 2022. ere are about 350,000 home res per year, which is about one re every 88 seconds. 79 percent of re deaths and 73 percent of all reported re injuries are caused by home res. December marks the end of my first two years serving as your county supervisor. I'm proud of my office's focus on issues important to our seniors. Through meet and greets, health and wellness expos, I.D. theft and scam workshops, and, most recently, computer literacy courses, my office has worked to engage with our beloved senior community. We have also initiated many programs designed to directly enhance the lives of our seniors. Our Hire- a-Senior and Hire-a-Veteran programs were created to provide employment opportunities to many of our seniors. Our Home Rehabilitation (Pruitt) Program and our Home Enhancement Program have addressed home repair needs for seniors. I look forward to continuing to serve and learn from our seniors.
