12 | SUN CITY CORE COURIER | JANUARY 2025 | We have been very busy this year, making over 1,700 free items that were all donated to numerous organizations. The Menifee Union School District's Fall Family Resource Fair drew more than 150 guests on Nov. 2. We were invited to attend, sold some items, and received a lot of interest about what we do. We showed some items we make and told people about the organizations we donate to. In the process, we were able to add a few more places to donate our items to. Our annual donation on Oct. 30 included 59 Christmas hats that went to My City Youth Organization in Hemet. Knitters & Crocheters 2025 Woodshop Classes are scheduled! There have recently been many requests for daytime classes at the Woodshop instead of evening classes. These requests were appreciated, and we listened. We now have daytime classes scheduled. All of our classes are appropriate for a beginner. Most of our classes meet two days per week for two weeks and usually last up to three hours each day. The Beginning Woodworking Class begins Jan. 22. The class will meet on Wednesdays and Saturdays, 9 am - 12:30 pm for two weeks and up to three weeks if more time is needed. You will learn how to SAFELY use and operate various tools and machinery to complete your project. In this class, you will make a beautiful serving tray. Making this tray will give you the knowledge you need to design and construct a cutting board in the future. The total cost for this class is $50, which includes all wood, supplies, and instruction. Do you want to be a wood turner? We have two Lathe classes: Both are Mondays and Wednesdays, 9 am - 12 pm, for two weeks. The first begins Jan. 6; the second begins Feb. 3. In both classes, you will learn the parts of the lathe and the tools needed to safely operate and complete your projects. The total cost is $50 for four classes and includes all wood, supplies, and instruction. Scroll Saw classes are Tuesdays from 9:30-11 am, for four weeks. You will learn the safety of using a scroll saw along with the variety of saw blades needed to use for various types of wood. You will learn to cut out wood puzzles and to cut very intricate wood pieces. The total cost of a four-week Scroll Saw class is $30 and includes all wood, supplies, and instruction. Stop by the Woodshop, Monday to Friday, from 9 am - 3 pm, or Saturday, from 9 am to 12 pm, to sign up for a Woodshop Class. We will also have a sign-up sheet for the upcoming Sign-Making class and Cutting Board class. A 50 percent deposit to hold a spot in a class is requested. The monitor on duty can give you a quick tour of the Woodshop. Everyone who takes a Woodshop class are always very happy with their finished projects. Below are students who recently completed a Cutting Board class holding their finished boards. They had a variety of hardwoods to choose from to make their cutting boards. They all turned out beautifully! The Woodshop's first raffle of 2025 is a beautiful pen. This pen is made with Purple Heart wood. It was turned on a lathe and donated by woodshop member Lynn Gaughen. Thank you, Lynn, for making and donating this pen. The winning raffle ticket will be drawn Fri., Jan. 31 at 12 pm. Stop by the Woodshop, M-F, 9 am - 2 pm, or Sat., 9 am - 12 pm, to purchase that winning raffle ticket. You have the choice of purchasing two tickets for $5 or five tickets for $10. You do not need to be a member of the Woodshop to purchase tickets. The raffle is open to everyone that lives within the Core, and you do not need to be present to win. The winner will be called. If the person holding the winning raffle ticket does not respond after numerous phone calls over a one-week period, then another ticket will be drawn and that new winner will be called. The Woodshop thanks you for your support. Good luck to everyone! Woodshop Group L-R: Instructor Rick Vasquez, Chris Darke, Susan Gogas, Roy Van Renselaar, and Instructor Lynn Gaughen. Rick is holding the board made by Jay Barillaro, who is not pictured . Woodshop Rae
