26 | OHCC LIVING | FEBRUARY 2025 | I hope you were all able to attend the special concert that was presented on Jan. 25 in Abravanel Hall at 7 pm featuring vocals by Melissa Musial and accompanied by Elan McMahan on the piano. The enormous amount of talent between these two ladies is astounding and I'll bet the concert was amazing. I say this because I have witnessed them perform before and was amazed. I had to write and submit this article before the performance, so I am assuming it took place, and it was great. Also, I hope you were able to join the Choral Society on Do Dues Day. New singers and supporters are always welcome. You don't have to be a singer as there are a lot of other things that are necessary to operate the Chorale and to present our concerts. We are commencing rehearsals in early February for our next concert in the spring. Our rehearsals are on Thursdays from 10:15 am until 12 pm. If you haven't joined yet, and think you might be interested, come to a rehearsal and see if it is for you. Even if you have never sung in a group before, you might really enjoy being part of such a great group of people. It is an awful lot of fun. Written by Jack Shabel Choral Society Over the years, members of the Sewing Etc. Club have suggested changing its name to let the community know that they do much more than sew. Yes, they do a LOT of sewing such as quilts, Christmas stockings, Comfort Quilts for the children of Camp Pendleton's deployed parents, cradle quilts… well you get the idea. And, yes, alternative names have been considered; but how do we incorporate all the activities? In the end, most everyone agreed that we just need to do more to promote the "Etc." in our current moniker. Etc. is short for et cetera (a Latin term translated as "and the rest.") "And the rest" in our club's world means just about anything that anyone cares to make involving: fabric, thread, yarn, wool roving and other fibers. The skills, practiced or newly learned, include sewing by hand or machine, embroidery, needlepoint, cross stitch, crocheting, knitting, felting (we do have a felting machine and a portable washer), needle punch work, rug hooking, etc. So, now you know why the club hasn't changed its name. To participate in the activities mentioned above, the club has regularly scheduled "Drop In" hours for groups to work on projects and socialize in the Sewing Room*. Check us out: Tuesday (3 to 4:45 pm) Knitters, Crocheters, etc, Group; Tuesday (6 to 8 pm) Sew, Craft & Chat Group; Friday (9 am to noon) Sewing/Quilting; Friday (noon to 3 pm) Sharing Session -Sew, Knit, Etc. Every second Saturday (9 am to 5 pm) the Sit & Sew Group. *Maybe someday the room will have a new sign that says: Sewing Etc. Club! The club also hosts a variety of classes for members. Please visit our website for the schedule and more. http://ohccsewing.wixsite. com/ohccsewing If you are interested in participating in our activities or would like to make suggestions for classes or activities but are not sure who to reach out to for further information, please contact MaryLu Belisle (952) 454-1931. All are welcome to join us. Dues are still just $7 a year. Member meetings are held at 9:30 am on the first Thursday of each month in the Mykonos Room and guests are invited. We look forward to seeing you! Submitted by Marylu Belisle Sewing Etc. Club
