| OHCC LIVING | FEBRUARY 2025 | 35 San Diego County, one of California's oldest wine-producing regions, boasts a diverse range of wine-growing areas characterized by unique microclimates and terroirs. With over 115 wineries spread across the county, San Diego has firmly established itself as a destination for wine enthusiasts. The Ramona Valley AVA is one of the county's most prominent wine regions. Located about 45 minutes northeast of downtown San Diego, this region is known for its warm climate and rocky soil, perfect for growing bold reds like Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Tempranillo, along with aromatic whites such as Viognier. The boutique, family- owned wineries here offer intimate tasting experiences. Just north of Ramona lies the Highland Valley region, nestled in the hills near Escondido. This area excels in producing Rhône-style wines, with Grenache, Syrah, and Viognier being standout varietals. Wineries here, such as Orfila Vineyards and Domaine Artefact, often offer stunning views alongside their tasting rooms. The San Pasqual Valley AVA, located southeast of Escondido, is one of California's oldest designated wine regions. Its Mediterranean-like climate supports a mix of reds and whites, with standout varieties including Sangiovese and Zinfandel. The region is home to both rustic vineyards and urban tasting rooms. Further east, the mountain town of Julian is known for its fruit wines, particularly apple wine, alongside traditional grape varietals like Syrah and Chardonnay. Julian's wineries, such as Volcan Mountain Winery, offer a unique small-town charm paired with high- quality wines. In the northeastern part of the county, Warner Springs features high-elevation vineyards that excel at growing Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel. The cooler nights and sunny days create ideal ripening conditions. Lastly, San Diego's urban wineries in neighborhoods like Little Italy and Liberty Station bring the wine-tasting experience into the city. These wineries often source grapes from nearby regions and offer modern tasting rooms in lively urban settings. From the rolling hills of Ramona to the charming tasting rooms of Julian, San Diego County's wine regions offer a diverse and delightful experience for any wine lover. The San Diego County Vintner Association has a website that has more information about the organization and the member wineries at sandiegowineries.org. OH, Wine Tasting Club is open to all residents of OHCC for an annual fee of $15. ~ Jody McDonough (760) 653-8198, jodyzm@ gmail.com Wine Tasting Club Yiddish Club We invite all residents of Ocean Hills Country Club to join our Yiddish Club! However, the first question most people ask when invited to join the Yiddish Club is: "Do I have to speak or understand Yiddish?" The answer is an unequivocal NO! A very few of our members speak Yiddish, but the majority of members have incorporated "Yinglish," which is an anglicized form of Yiddish, into our English language. Commonly, we use such "Yiddish" words as: klutz, kvetch, schlep, schmooze, nosh, chutzpah, glitch, kibitz, schmo, oy vey, mensch, and putz! If you recognize at least four of these 12 words, then you are considered a qualified "Yinglish" speaker and would be comfortable joining the Club! We are a cultural, and not a religious club. As such, we are listing our upcoming events for 2025 and invite all of you to attend.
