16 | OHCC LIVING | FEBRUARY 2025 | After a one-month hiatus in January, the Ballroom Dance Club is back this month with our monthly dance and weekly lessons. Join us at our February dance to be held on Valentine's Day, Fri., Feb. 14 in Abravanel Hall from 7 to 9:15 pm. Get some exercise, have fun, and make new social connections. Dress is casual. We will dance to the music of the popular Music Station Duo. The cost will be $15/member or $20/nonmember. The club sponsors weekly ballroom dance lessons each Wednesday in Abravanel Hall from 2 to 3:45 pm. • 2 – 2:45 pm Beginner Class • 2:45 – 3 pm Dance Tips and Techniques for both Beginners and Intermediates • 3 – 3:45 pm Intermediate Class The cost for the Beginner or Intermediate class is $10 for members and $12 for nonmembers. Pay at the door (no reservations are required, just come). The class schedule through May is: February and March, Swing • April and May, Cha-Cha. The dance being taught in February and March is East Coast Swing. This dance traces its roots to Lindy Hop (also called Jitterbug). It was originally danced in the 1920s and 1930s to big band music. In the 1940s it became a ballroom dance called Eastern Swing that eventually was changed to be called East Coast Swing. It is a fun, upbeat, non-progressive dance that is characterized by its bounce, back break (rock step), and swing hip action. East Coast Swing is best suited to being danced to the 1950s rock and roll style of music although you can dance it to a wide range of music and music tempos making it a popular dance for new dancers. Lesson Review and Practice Sessions are held in Abravanel Hall from 2 to 4 pm each week on Mondays. Marvin and Lynn Wheeler, who are very experienced dancers, review Wednesday's lessons and provide help upon request. After the review, you can practice your dancing to a variety of ballroom music. The event is FREE, just drop in. These sessions are open to all residents of OHCC and guests. The annual membership dues for the Ballroom Dance Club are $10 per person. With this membership you will receive regular emails describing club activities as well as discounts for dances and lessons. Written by Marv Todd (978) 239-5440, mtodd941@gmail.com. Ballroom Dance
