28 | OHCC LIVING | MARCH 2025 | Reblooming Your Supermarket Orchids Many of us love orchids, but we don't know what to do when the last bloom falls o. Instead of disposing of these beautiful plants, learn how to rebloom your orchids. Come to OHCC Garden Club's March program, Reblooming Your Supermarket Orchids, to learn how to identify and nurture orchids that will thrive for years to come. We are delighted to have Kathie Hile share her passion for growing orchids with us. Kathie was a member of the Sonoma County Orchid Society for over 36 years. At one time Kathie had close to 1,000 orchids in her Santa Rosa greenhouse and home. Her love of orchids will challenge and inspire us to keep our orchids blooming! Event Details: Wed., March 12, Abravanel Hall, social time: 9:30 am and the meeting starts at 10 am. Join the Garden Club for just $10 per year — sign up at any meeting. Be sure to stop by the Share Table for gardening treasures. We look forward to seeing you! Written by Betsy Davis, (408) 309- 6883, betsy.m.davis@gmail.com Garden Club Village Vets I don't know about you, but the evenings have felt colder this winter. Come on, spring! January wrapped up on a high note with our General Meeting, featuring Harriet Jo Joslyn from Honor Flight San Diego (HFSD). Check out the photos (above) of Smitty and Sal to see just how impactful these honor ights are. For those who couldn't attend, HFSD is a non-prot that volunteers to escort San Diego County veterans to Washington, D.C., to visit the memorials dedicated to their service. ese ights are a life-changing experience for veterans, and they don't cost a thing. For more details, visit Honor Flight San Diego at https://www.honorightsandiego.org. We also had an amazing turnout for our January "Do Dues Days!" By the end of the month, we hit a record membership number 277 members - thanks to our treasurer and historian, Smitty! Looking ahead, we have another exciting General Meeting coming up. Robert Genat, a Veterans Club member, has arranged for a team from the USS Midway to give a presentation about the ship and its living history museum. It's a great way to get a sneak peek before visiting in person. e meeting will be on March 27, at 3 pm in Abravanel, with doors opening at 2:30 pm. We're also working on building connections with several veteran organizations and service providers. One key partner is the Veterans Association of North County (VANC), which oers a one-stop resource center for active-duty military, veterans, and their families. VANC connects individuals with services in education, nance, health, and wellness, and has ve Veterans Service Ocers (VSOs) to assist with VA claims. New Board member Marty Budo, Commander Emeritus Joe Ashby, and I will be attending VANC's rst Monday meetings and will keep you updated on any events that might interest you. Mark your calendars for our annual Hot Dog Extravaganza, which will kick o at noon on May 22, in the Lanai. is year, we're featuring a special active-duty guest (I can't reveal his name just yet, but keep your ngers crossed)! Lastly, OHCC Village Vets provides services to replace, add, and dispose of American ags, as well as side-mounted agpoles and brackets. Donations are requested. If you need any of these services, contact Village Vet Director Bob St. Laurent at (336) 509-8788. Written By Bob Bechill, Commander
