This is a writing assignment where you are given a small amount of time to write a response to a given prompt. You might have experienced a quick write as an exercise in an English class, as part of an interview, or in a journalism assignment. The skill might also come in handy in a courtroom setting, either for a lawyer or for a juror. As a related skill, are you capable of holding and writing an opinion that you don't share? This might be a stimulating assignment for a quick write. You might see an assignment like this in political science or logic to test your ability to open your mind to see the other side of a topic in current affairs, say a speech, policy or court ruling. You might also try this in a debate setting. Choose a topic upon which you and a good friend disagree. To spice it up, you could each pick the opposite side. The "winner" would need to be open minded enough to effectively argue the other side. These are variations on a common theme that involves creative writing. Our Creative Writers Club has several experienced writers in many forms of literature. Come join us at Creative Writers Club meetings to share your ideas in a friendly setting and listen to the writings and opinions of others. You will find this very stimulating. At the March Board of Directors meeting, the Veterans of Sun Lakes CC unanimously elected Ed Luna (photo inset), our former Branch Representative for the United States Air Force in our organization, to become our new Executive Director for 2025- 26. Ed will assume his position beginning in April as he leads an elite group of nearly 150 members including 46 combat veterans. Our club is blessed to include Veterans from all branches including the United States Air Force, Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard. The formal transfer of duties was made official at the monthly general meeting on March 11, as our outgoing president, Will Baker-USMC, presented the proclamation. Our club is made up of one-quarter of one percent of all Sun Lakers, a truly elite group of patriots indeed. Ed joined the Air Force at just 18 years of age upon graduating from high school in 1961. After basic training he was selected for advanced classes with the Security Service Electronic Intercept Communications Tech School at Goodfellow Air Force Base near San Angelo, Texas. That resulted in his transfer to Karamursel Air Station in Turkey. Ed's performance led to an assignment monitoring Soviet MIG planes over the Black Sea. Following this he found himself attached to the Elite Strategic Air Command (SAC), where he supervised our nation's most classified material as he carried a top secret security clearance. He completed his tour of duty at Mather AFB and received an honorable discharge in 1965. Ed and his wife Judy moved into Sun Lakes in 2013 and enjoy many activities our community has to offer. The Veterans of Sun Lakes CC is very fortunate to celebrate its new Executive Director and invite all Sun Lakers to join our organization and participate in our important role here in Sun Lakes. Among other field trips, 32 members went to the Palm Springs Air Museum in March. One of our Board members donated both the bus transportation and the lunches from Whole Foods. Thank you to Beverly Kreider for her generosity. Guest speaker in March was Carol Albaugh from Faith in Action, discussing programs to assist Veterans in need locally. Our regular monthly meetings are the second Tuesday of the month at 9 am sharp in the Main Clubhouse Ballroom. For more information, call Will Baker at (951) 946 0412.
